Hi All
I recently purchased a Cabanon Atlantis second hand.
It only has one owner from new and was bought in 2005.
The tent has only been used for 12 weeks in the last 6 years but I forgot to ask the previous owners if they'd waterproofed it, I don't beleive it's been done since new.
How long would it be before it had its first waterproofing.

hi and welcome

cotton canvas does not need to be waterproofed at all unless very old or there is a problem.now if your tt has not been used for awhile you will need to weather it.to do this get it wet let it dry and wet again this will plump up the threads in the canvas and make it waterproof.

Correct. 2005 is still quite new really, and if its been fairly well looked after, you shouldn't have to do anything. Like wongers says, it wouldn't hurt to open it up and hose it down, but chances are it wont let water through anyway.

Sorry to butt into your question but our 2004 trailer tent has been waterproofed at some point and from what i understand if your tt has never been waterproofed then it doesn't other than soaking it to get the fibres to close up but if it has been waterproofed with a waterproofer like fabsil it will need doing again.

Is that correct?  I don't really want to have to waterproof it i don't have to but if it has been done once then i gather that i would have to carry on doing so :(

Thanks :)

i'm afraid you are correct as a rule if been done then you will have to keep it up as the silicone in the waterproofer stops the canvas expanding as it should.it is not something that needs doing every year but this will depend on how much the tt is used.on the bright side fabsil gives uv protection so your canvas should last along time.if i was you i would look at keeping the main cabin done all over but just the roof of the awning.

Thanks all for the messages. In reply to ashwellgirl i have also heard that once you start waterproofing then you have to carry on that's why i had my concerns.

I was wondering about this as well. I have a 1991 Conway and I put it up over Christmas, absolutely delighted with it, the canvas is spotless. I'm going to put it up again next week and I was thinking of water proofing it. I don't know if it has been done before as I only bought it recently. Is there any way of telling (other than leaving it out in the rain!).

tend to find if i fabsil canvas the rain beads more and runs of. without fabsil the rain soaks more into the canvas before running of,so put your unit up hose it with a spray and watch the droplets.one of your age i think your be lucky if none of the previous owners have not "waterproofed" at some point.

never listen to what previous owners say!
my friend learnt the hard way when it came to waterproofing when they said it had been done....when it hadnt!
best to do it, then you know its been done for peace of mind.
