hi,last year i bought a pennine fiesta 1990 for an absolute steal €400 then after a few trips i realised why it was such a bargain the bottom half of the side walls were falling away rotten !! now i must say that i still think it was quite a good buy as everything else is in great condition and im hoping that i can do the repairs with a bit of sound advice from some fellow campers ,i am looking for advice on what products to use to seal the replaced plywood and a few more materials such as what staples and tools to use to re aply the aluminium sheet plus a few instructions ,i live in the rep of ireland and folding campers are quite the rareity here to be honest i have never seen another one around and no one seems to know what im talking about when i ask in diy hire shops and the like .i would love to be able to take it to a proper repair establishment but 1 i dont know of any in the south (im in kerry ) also being a single mom of two little ones i would not have the funds to do that .i consider myself quite handy when it comes to diy but i would be reluctant to just jump straight in before i get a bit of sound info so if anyone could help i would be ever so gratefull.

I posted those pictures.
If the walls are made of plywood with inner vinyl walls and aluminiun outer that is the same as mine.
Picture of small wall to left of my door.
Let me know if yours is of similar construction and I will tell you how I fixed mine, the materials I used and where I got them.

I notice you are a single Mum so I wish you the best of luck. How good are your DIY skills and what tools do you have or can borrow? It can be a big job. I am not a professional but I have been doing all kinds of DIY for years. I repared a Conway Crusader which has the door on the side. Someone with a Fiesta might also help.
Some questions.
Is the door ok? Are the front and back walls ok? perhaps made of something different? I don't know much about Pennine fiestas. Is the door on the back?
How bad are the walls? If the rot is right up to the top you will probably have to replace them. What is attached to the walls on the inside? Drawers cupboards seat? they would have to be removed.
If you have to remove the walls you will have to detach them from the back and front the floor and from the cabin top rails. You will probably find the floor at the edges will need some repair. You will need to remove the Cabin top or prop it up while you remove the walls. Remove and fix one wall before attempting the other one.
Marine or outdoor 18mm plywood can be bought locally. Don't use cheap interior ply.
6mm or 8mm Stucco aluminium is what the outer shell can be bought on the internet but can be pricy and would need painting. I managed to save all my outer stucco using a wall scraper and a lot of care. The 3mm vinyl coated plywood inner wall boards I got from 'Magnum Motor Homes' on the internet. Boards are 7ft x 4ft £17.99 each and £19 postage for up to 4 boards. The adhesive and sealant is available on the internet or at camping stores. If you still fancy fixing your camper after reading all this I can tell you more.

If all this has put you off you might still be able to use the camper if it is holding together or perhaps you could extend its life by removing cupboards etc and covering the floor with 6mm plywood then lining the walls with new vinyl wall boards if the top of the walls are still solid enough to fasten them to and use aluminium angle to fasten them to the floor? Using this method put wall board on with vinyl facing the walls to protect it and another sheet on top with vinyl facing inside, strengthening the walls by 6mm.
You would probably need 3 boards. 3 x 18 = 54 + 19 = £73 plus glue.
Cost about £80 to £100 for this method.

oh jeez now starting to question my diy skills after reading that !! there is a bit of a difference the vinyl is not on any kind of board its just the self adhesive stuff that is stuck straight to the ply , it was such a lovely day here yesterday i was able go open her up and take a few pics

600`well i finally managed to get some pics up !!  as you can see the rot is quite bad the top is not as bad but will all need to be replaced , the door is at the back and  wall is just starting to go and is no where near as bad as the sides . im hoping that any tools i dont have i can either hire or borrow i just have the basics drill, scrapers, screwdrivers,wrenches ,sealant tube gun, i'm hoping to be able to salvage the aluminium and now after seeing all the rot in the ply i think that will be easier than i thought .

When the walls rot the vinyl peels off as if it is stuck on. It is stuck on by the manufacturer but you have to buy the boards. If you work your way to the good wall at the top you will see it is 18mm ply with 3mm ply with vinyl on. How far up the wall is the rot? I will send you a link to putting photos on. That's not easy either.

I see you have figured the photos out.
If you want to fix the walls properly you will have to find out how they are fastened to the front, back, floor and bed rails. I would do the easiest side first removing cupboards any electrics etc from the inside and propping the beds up with something. Do one side at a time so it does not all collapse. Then remove all the screws putting them in bags marked with where they came from. There are different screws for places. Different heads and lengths. If some are too rusty get some similar ones. The ones under the camper will probably be rusted away and have to be pulled out with plyers. The walls look lower than mine and so cheaper to replace and far less stuff to remove. No toilet or fridge. you might only need 2 inner wall boards. It is easy to scrape off the outer aluminium from the rotten part but gets harder at the top so don't try to remove it until the walls are off. Looking at the pictures, how much rot is there? You might want to dig out the bad, put some new ply in cover the floor with 6mm ply and just replace the inner boards? It is not easy to remove the aluminium outer from good wood.

i was thinking that would be tricky but then on monday was quite pleased the wood was quite soft even at the top so im hoping that will be easier than id originally thought , im going to have to do a bit more digging to find out how side walls are actually held to the back and front  but from looking underneath camper it looks like the sides are attached to the floor by a batten 1 1/2" x 2" . the sofa cubbards will have to come out , we dont have the luxury of a toilet we take a porta poti  ill be able to tell (hopefully) if i need to take out the front storage where the fridge is when i take off the first wall . is the 3mm ply nessesary would it work to put 20mm marine ply and no 3mm ?

I don't think you can get 20mm ply. 18mm is standard. I suppose you might be able to get away with just using 18mm and paint the sides you can still see after you put the seats etc back? Or wallpaper/fablon? Many suppliers will cut ply to size for you making it easier to handle. Measure very carfully. It is costly if you make a mistake. Tip, measure twice, cut once. I think you can get 3.6mm ply? Remember to get exterior or marine ply not the cheap stuff. Perhaps campers are made with cheap plywood?

Some more pictures for you. I scraped the aluminium then sanded the rest off. I used Sikaflex to glue the aluminium to the plywood. That was reccomended to me by fellow campers. Expensive but good. I think you will only need one tube?
You can see all the cutouts I had to do to my back wall. You won't have to do these?

I just dug out what it cost to repair my 1998 Crusader.
I paid £1200 plus £70 to collect it from London.
Total including repairs £1543.
They were selling for £2200 at that time.

just got some quotes for the ply 8x4 marine €60  €30-35 for the 3mm 8x4 now i know i can get it here ill definatley put it on and im hoping to salvage the aluminium but have one problem just measured my camper sides and its 100 inches !! 4 inches longer than the ply so i have to make a join somewhere which will make it a bit more dificult or is it even reccommended to have a join on the sides ?
