gave the countryman a run out this weekend. Everything works fine except the water pump which is plugged in to the external socket. The battery was connected and all power master switches were switched to on in the bottom left cupboard under the sink. I am sure that the pump is 12v so should run off the battery which was fully charged. Is there somewhere in a 1995 countryman where I have to switch the battery on? Or do I just connect the crocodile clips?

Not sure about the Countryman but in our Fiesta and I assume in the Pullman we have now, you have to switch the rocker switch to Van (as opposed to Car). If your interior lights worked then your 12v connection is OK.  You may need to fiddle about under the cupboards to get a connection - my hubby was always telling me off for leaving things loose in the cupboards that knocked the wires loose.

It could be your switch which may need re-wiring or replacing or it could be the pump - you can get replacements quite cheaply.

we don't have interior lights in the countryman its quite old (1995).  I am happy to buy a new pump but I just need to make sure I am not missing a switch first.  I keep reading about this switch that says car/van/battery but I am not sure of where it is in the countryman and if I have it set right???

All the switches I have switched on a mini tripswitch fusebox type thingy are in the bottom left cupboard is there any other switches or locations I can try

There should be a battery indicator with a rocker switch underneath it somewhere. On our Fiesta it was on the side of the left hand cupboard just inside the door. On the Pullman it is on the outside of the seat cupboard (the fuse panel is inside the seat cupboard).

I don't know where it is on the Countryman and have just been through all the pictures on ebay completed listings to see if I can spot it. Ha ha. Hopefully someone on here with a similar year will be able to tell you where it is.

The middle position is Off. Left is Car for if you want to have the fridge running while you are towing ( there is a picture of a car) and the right position is Van (picture of a Caravan) which makes all the stuff work. Did you try out any of the 2 pin plugs to see if they work?

Best thing to do is check the wiring inside the camper where the pump socket is (is the pump a push in type with the water & electric) then follow it. Do you have any other 12volt things. Also does it have an EHU (Mains Unit) I had to comepletly rewire my 1999 Sterling both mains & 12volt it was in a real mess & very dangerous.

If it ain't broke don't try to fix it!

I had a problem last week with the water pump on my Pennine Pathfinder.

Eventually I traced it to verdigris on the contact pins and socket at the external connection.

I used a toothbrush style wire brush to clean the pins and a tightly rolled up peice of emery paper (wet & dry) to clean the sockets. I also gave both the plug and the socket a hefty squirt of Halfords Electrical Contact cleaner. Everything is working fine now but it did take me two days to find the fault.

When we first used the tap in out Countryman I was looking for a switch but it turned out we had a foot pump which is a small dome in the floor in fornt of the sink. So open the tap, foot on the pump & the water should flow.
