Hi all,

We've just brought our folding camper (pennine Pullman) last month. We've just booked our first trip away at Easter with friends who have a caravan.

My question is when we booked it mentioned about caravans and trailer tents and what fields etc are suitable. My friends advised we better phone to check if we could take our FC on the same field as caravans. After calling they put our mind at rest and said all ok

Back to my question...... What does everyone do I terms of booking a pitch. Do you phone to check every time you book or just hope they see a FC as a caravan??
Another thing I've seen is some accept caravans and not TT's. Call and check or leave it chance????

Thanks all

If they say no tents or no trailer tents I phone and explain there is no need to peg the main unit and it has the same footprint as a caravan. Its usually because they are "precious" about their hardstanding as much as anything. We have only once been turned down because their licence said nothing which was more than 50 % canvas.

I have found so many times that most sites need an explanation as to what a folding camper is so I say its half a caravan. I now have a bigger problem this year as I have a crusader now & I suppose this must me called a sliding camper, better change the name of this section of the forum too

I have found that even after arriving at the reception of a CP and where they could look out and see the trailer, they had no idea what size the unit would be when it was folded out.
They tried to put us on a pitch that would have been far too small.

When I explained that once erected, it would be 20' long, I was shown to a different pitch. After it was erected, the warden came along to see the inside and he was most impressed.

Folding Campers and Trailer Tents have been around for many years but clearly there are a number of site which have no experiebnce of dealing with them.

I have just booked 5 campsites in Northern Ireland and 4 of the 5 had no idea what I was taling about when I explained my FC.

I did have trouble once when we had told the site that we had a folding camper and were put on the caravan field. Booked the same pitch for the next year and the owner was very snooty and said we weren't allowed there. The caravan field was much better than the other fields, had a much better view and facilities.

Hi Pauline, If I was booking a site for my FC I would insist that I was on "the caravan field". If they tried to put me anywhere else I would be cancelling the booking.

Would you book as a Caravan then? Or as a trailer tent?

I would book as a Folding Camper but if there was no provision for that I would book as a caravan but inform them at the first oportunity that it was a folding camper.

Afterall, the part that touches the pitch is the same as a caravan and requires the same services as a caravan.

A TT on the other hand requires pegging out and as such some caravan pitches would be unsuitabe.

For us it depends.  We have been on a few tent fields with ehu when camping with family but we prefer to opt for hard standing and/or caravan pitches just because these are less muddy for the dogs and because of towing issues with wet grass.  Last year we towed with a BMW 5 series which really does not like wet grass or mud though we have switched now so may risk tent fields again.
