No, you don't need the full length of zip. You need the zip to start at the position the normal awning zip starts but it only needs to go as far as just a bit longer than the width of the awning (if that makes sense). So, when you ay the porch awning on the floor you'll have quite a long piece of zip on one side of it and a really short piece on the other.
Hopefully Maquatic won't mind me stealing their picture, but it should explain it. The red line is where the zip would go (or the other way round if that's where the zp starts). I'll remove the pic if Maquatic wants me to.

------------- Give a man a fish and he'll feed his family for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he'll sit around on a boat all day drinking beer!

No problem using the photo Stix, we're all here to share and help each other.
------------- I came into this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.
Window of dry weather this morning, put the FC up matched zip to FC, zip stitched to awning using domestic sewing machine.
Back outside to fit awning.............which it does.
Folded the FC down, and it's packed and ready to go to somerset on Wednesday..........

Simples!
Awesome stuff. you could start up in business now ;)
Hopefully you found it to be a really easy job (apart from wrestling the porch awning around a sewing machine, lol).
You now need to post pics of your efforts, lol

Hi, I have a pennine pullman. Is there a light weight caravan awning I could buy that will fit my Trailer tent. I don't fancy paying £1000 for a new one?

small Swift porch awnings are a good bet, not massive though so depends how big you need it to be. Plus, it will need a zip sewn on to it

We are just back from our first trip with our home-converted porch awning and it worked really well. So much so that I cant see us using the main awning very often now, if at all.
I bought some cling-ons and some elastic to clip the sides of the awning to a couple of points on the body of the camper and will add a couple more next time we go.
My only slight concern is how well the awning will fair in the wind but we will see. Obviously we wouldnt use it in very bad weather but I am not sure how draught proof it will be. Overall for £120 its a real success!
