Its not so much "what can you get into the trailer" but what weight can your car tow either braked or unbraked. This should give you an idea.

Good Luck

Hi 7 Go Camping

I think i've seen your posts on the camping section and maybe even replied :)

A trailer tent can easily hold 8 so you have no problem there :)  There are 2 double beds and then you can get 2 underbed pods to fit the other 4 people.  They do fit a double airbed in them but not 2 singles.

The living area is large and you can get them with extensions and sun canopies to really extend the living area :)

We have the conway classic with extension and sun canopy and it is huge.  We have two underbed pods so each of our 3 children get their own bedroom :)

We also have 2 dogs so have to take a huge crate for them.  We've not been away in this one yet but we used to have a conway contiki which was a lot smaller but we weren't cramped :)

I love the luxury of sleeping off the floor yet my son only feels that he is camping if he is sleeping (on an airbed) on the floor lol.

I think a trailer tent would be perfect for you :)

Do you have any dealers near you that have trailer tents on display?  Or if you feel like a trip out there is tonywild near Woburn or Burcroft camping, Billing Aquadrome.

Keep us up to date on what you decide :)

if you look at the more traditional style tt's then yes can sleep 8 with 2 each side in the trailer part plus 2 each side in underbed pods.now as to how much they carry well you get underseat lockers down both sides witch will hold all the smaller stuff plus you can pack a good amount in the footwell (inbetween the seats)also you can have a front mounted box and even a roofrack.

considering the size of your family i would think you have a lardge pepole carrier so the tow weight should not be a problem but best look into it.

our car can pull about 1485 so i don't think that would  matter what sort of ones would be good as i have seen that some of the under pods only sleep one

we got all the bits for the inside of our tent form tony wild there are great there

Tony Wild always have some trailer tents on display so worth a look and you can pick up the front boxes for the front of the trailer tent for extra storage.

We didn't buy our tt from Tony Wild but they don't mind you going and asking questions about your tt.  There again the prices in the shop are reasonable so we often end up buying something lol.  I really like there picnic rugs so alaways buy one when we are there lol.

Trailer tents are definitely the way to go. Don't discount an older model - our Conway camargue is getting on for 26 years old if my maths is correct and still going strong. It's had some repairs to the canopy, but nothing major. We have two under pod tents so can easily sleep 8, the main living area is huge. We love it, but it does take quite a while to erect, so we're thinking of looking for something else - well, I am, just got to persuade my other half!!!

Regarding Wongers statement "considering the size of your family i would think you have a lardge pepole carrier so the tow weight should not be a problem but best look into it."

You can legaly tow upto 50% of the kerbweight of your vehicle if the trailer is unbraked, if you had a Ford Scorpio you could tow about 750kg but if you have a Ford Focus you are restricted to about 550kg. Remember that the brakes on your vehicle will be taking on upto an extra 50% weight burden when slowing you down or stopping you in an emergency so the nearer to the 50% weight you are the less efficient your brakes will be. Most manufacturers also put a weight capacity on what the trailer will carry. For example, if ashwellgirl's Conway Classic Trio is unbraked it weighs 375kg, the manufacturers carry capacity is 100kg giving a gross weight of 475kg. This could be towed legaly by the Focus or the Scorpio.

The cavaliar attitude of the "pack it in" fraternity is a worry. Please look into braked and unbraked weights carefully, check the VIN plate under the bonnet to see what the towing capacity is for your vehicle. It is an offence under the Road Traffic Act 1988 to tow a trailer exceeding the vehicles maximum towing limit. If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident while doing so you could be prosecuted and also find that your insurance is invalid, well worth spending a bit of time checking that you are buying something that you can legaly tow.

Good Luck again,

Mike

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting that your outfit wasn't legal, I was just using your TT as an example as I used to have one and knew the weights. Glad to hear that your other half goes on the legal side.
