Hi

We have a 2003 Vauxhall astra 2.0d sxi and we have a 2008 Pathfinder with a powermover fitted. The problem we have is bafling both my dh my dfil and the towbar fitting man!! Our car will not charge the lesiure battery whilst we are moving. We have changed both the plug on the car and the camper we have change both the relay in the car and the camper but still the battery is flat when we get to the campsite??? We have also had the zig zag switch off and ensured all the wires are connected properly but it still shows no output when its switched to car. The tow bar man can find no fault with the car and we cant find anything wrong with the camper??? Could it just be the leisure battery needs replacing as it is 3 years old or could it be something more sinister?? Over to you.....

i know this is something you may have done ,but have you got the switch in the camper set to car when travelling , make sure there is output coming from the car ,have the engine running or there will be no voltage and but a multi meter across the pin on car socket ,

Hi dazjo,

I could well be wrong here, but someone did tell me that when you are moving, only the fridge will work from the car wiring, and not the battery charger. They said that the only way to charge the battery was either when the FC is connected to 240v ( with the internal charger ) or when you are at home with a standard battery charger. It could have been the guy at Pennine who told me this, and they are so helpful at Pennine that it would be well worth you giving them a ring and asking the question.

 Geoff

Geoff is right - Kev always charges our battery at home before we go with a charger he bought specifically for the leisure battery and we keep it topped up with a solar panel when we are away as we don't use EHU.

My car has a live to fridge and a live to battery both work when engine is running if you have a zig in your camper set the switch to TOURING and the battery will charge up when you are on the move

Thanks for your replies. Yes we have got the van switched to car and all the outputs are correct as the towbar man also checked them for us last week. We have checked and we can charge the battery whilst we are moving. The split voltage relay has been changed and it cycling over and over but as it does this the fridge switches on and the battery charger goes off then the fridge switches off and the battery starts to charge and this is happening over and over. If we disconnect the fridge the battery charges no problem and if we disconnect the battery charger the fridge works ok but as soon as both are on together it keeps switching from one to the other but the car voltage is stable at 13.5v??? Thanks for the idea about ringing pennine we may have to do that. This morning my dh has checked the consumer unit and found another relay which he has changed so he is going to check see if that makes a difference but if anyone has any more ideas feel free to keep posting.
