Hi all

Son has a Saxo 1.0litre and we have aquired a Conway contiki trailer tent which has a Max gross weight of 420kg what are your thoughts on towing with the Saxo ?

I think he will be OK the Saxo has a kerb weight of about 800kg , might need to work the gearbox a bit but should cope I feel.

I used to tow a huge camping trailer with a Citroen Ami 8.

Trevor.

You are only allowed to tow 400kg unbraked - 50% rule. You are only allowed 600kg braked.

Hi Dave

I was unaware of the 50% rule is it a fairly recent addition to the law?

I am sure almost everything I have towed until recently broke this rule.

Hi Outrider...hope THIS link helps :) Find the model of car and it tells you all you need to know

Edit: Hmm looking closer...it doesn't tell you braked/unbraked limits, try THIS site and put in your info it gives you a towing report :)

Oh dear lord it doesn't give you a Saxo, prob as it's not a towing car, sorry not much help there at all!

Hi Outrider,

I think the rules have been around for a long time:

a saxo should tow it ok as its a rolling weight, not a dead weight, although if the car has a number of passengers in it,then i would imagine it would struggle. If the weight of the unbraked trailer is over 50% as previously stated you will have a problem legally.

I remember us looking at our Conway Camargue TT (gross max weight 420kg as well)) and my OH's 1.9l Polo and discussing the combination, then starting to laugh at the very thought. And our Camargue is braked.  It's not the power of the engine it's the proportional weight that's the problem.....very much tail wagging the dog syndrome. You could of course not load the TT at all and keep it down to the ex-factory weight? Even then you'd probably find the nice polieceman instructing you to accompany him to the nearest weighbridge.

Checked in owners manual (should have done that first !!!!!!) it states Max weight

un-braked 440kg so the Contiki is just under the limit. I can't imagine that the trailer will ever be loaded to anywhere near its max gross weight anyway.
