I presume you mean Blue and Pink. The Blue fluid goes inside the Thetford cassette waste tank to break down "solids" and the pink goes in the fresh water flush tank.

What does the pink actually do? Is it necessary or will plain water do?

On the Pathfinder, the toilet is flushed from tank surrounding the toilet. If you take out the toilet roll holder and then pull the inner out you get direct access to the water tank and the pump. Have a look and see what condition the inside of the tank is. This can get really gunked up if you just use water with slime and fungus etc.You don't want the gunk and horrible bits coming out when you flush!

The pink stuff keeps the tank clear of the stuff, and helps with the nasty niffs.

The pink is for flushing from a reservoir tank attached to toilet.   Most cassette toilets have pumped water flushing from the same fresh water tank that supplies rest of the unit.  Therefore only blue ore green is used.   We use green because of visiting places that only have septic tank sewage system or 'wild' camping.  We also keep a supply of septic-friendly toilet paper.

My conway crusader FC (this is the newer toilet version  to  Venturis4's pennine fc) has a seperate water tank for the flush cycle which you put the pink stuff in. Blue/green stuff goes in the cassette.

. The rest of the water in the unit (hot water, drinking water, toilet sink) is supplied  via a seperate pump from an outside storage souce i.e. a aqua roll.

I think its mainly motor holmes and a few caravans  that have a built in water storage tank for both systems

Will be proven wrong soon!!!!!!.
