Hi guys,

Some of you will have read my previous posts, and know I am now the proud owner of a Conway Ascot - courtesy of a fellow ukcampsite user. I've been away in it a couple of times now and have some general questions:

1. The sink has a tap and a switch and some cables which are not attached to anything. I did find I used the sink and am interested in getting a pump to enable me to use it with electric hookup. I need some help here as i'm clueless.

2. We have a dog who tends to go wandering whenever she gets the chance. I don't really want to tie her up at night, but we had to on the 1 night we took her. She isn't used to a cage and is quite big so that's not an option. If she sleeps in the trailer she could still get out by the door. Does anyone have any suggestions from their own experience ?

3. I would like to take our youngest 2 kids bikes with us, would it be safe to get some strapping (think Aldi have these on offer next week) and strap them to the top of the trailer. I know you can get frames but these are expensive.

4. I bought a hitchlock from Aldi last week, but it's too small, can anyone recommend one that's on the cheap side, mainly for when it's at home - longer term it will be stored in the garage.

5. I found the beds comfortable, but the OH mentioned a bad back so I was thinking of getting a memory foam topper for the bed. Has anyone got one ?.

6. Where do you store all your clothes ?!. There are 5 of us !

Sorry for the big list of questions, but we are heading away in 2 weeks time for a weeks holiday, I can't wait. So far i'm loving the TT and want to learn from other people's experience and advice.

Thanks muchly in advance.

I can only really offer my experience for questions 2 and 6.

I have two greyhounds with considerable 'prey drive'. I have them on long leads with spikes in the past, now i have two of the delta things but not tried them yet. I got the long leads as 'lunging reins' off ebay. Sadly Lance chewed through those, so now they have chains, again purchased off ebay. These are about 15 foot long, so the dogs can walk about, but always stay within the confines of the pitch. they have never managed to pull the spikes out of the ground. They stay on them at night and don't seem to notice really, I make sure the 'spike' is near to where they mainly are so the chain is lose and you do have to jump up fairly regularly to untangle them, but with brighter dogs than greyhounds this could be less of a problem!

From the question about the clothes, I assume your TT has no 'wardrobe' section in the awning. Camp wardrobes tend to be (to me - it's all relative!) very expensive. Royal do a few, but i think they are in the £40 - £75 price bracket mainly. In my TT dd and i had a large, waterproof bag each and we kept these in the underbed space whilst away. We never managed to leave enough room in the TT to transport clothes on the trailer, they were always in the boot or roof box. You could use plastic boxes or one of those plastic drawer sets, too.

I have twice taken my two basset hounds. Both would disappear into the night given half a chance. I put the door (back of the trailer where the kitchen hangs) back on at night and use two multi-purpose leads, with clips both ends. I attach one dog to front frame and one dog to back frame. They both settled down and slept in the well in the middle.

I bought a cheapish (£15) hitchlock from Halfords.
Can't help with the rest, sorry.

Ours doesn't have a door behind the kitchen, but I do like the idea of clipping a lead onto the frame. I think i'll have to get her a nice new bed for the trailer and put her on a lead next to us.

Will check out Halfords for hitchlocks.

No wardrobe in our TT, we do have one we bought years ago for the tent but hardly used, and I think for our weeks holiday we might have to get that out, i'm just reluctant to lose too much space in the awning.....

Thanks guys.

I bought a 3" memory foam topper for our Combi Camp, and it's lovely  really comfortable. We use it on top of the original matresses which are only about 3" thick.

When you say wardrobe, do you mean hanging space, or just clothes storage? We used to use a clothes rail from Argos in our tents, with one of those canvas shelf units hanging from it. However, with the Combi Camp I found a better solution - we take two 3-drawer plastic drawer units. I pack the clothes, toiletries, towels & other bits'n'bobs in them at home, stack them in the car, then just lift them out & place them in the Combi Camp on site - no hassle.

with the beds we found that the memory foam was to thick with our fold over beds,so used a sim under the mattress, and this helped alot aswell as stayed on the bed.

the easy way to get the sink to work is with one of these

http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?rlz=1T4GFRE_enGB322GB323&q=12v+shower&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=6144997352274151102&sa=X&ei=TrQWTva9D8yFhQeuz-DMBQ&ved=0CEcQ8wIwAQ#

you can cut of the shower head and connect it to the tap.

you can strap the bikes to top of trailer just use somethig like some old carpet to protect the trailer cover.

as to clothes we tend to have one of those beach type bags each and they stay in there.

if the hitch lock is for home use you may be better with a wheel clamp,as with hitch lock they could just roll the trailer away and then cut the lock off somewhere else.

Those showers look an interesting and easy solution for the tap, any idea how long the batteries last though ?.

I've already taken the hitchlock back but am seriously considering getting a wheel clamp, they are selling those for £15 at the moment !.

Thanks for the advice regarding bikes, I'm not sure whether we'll have room in the car so the old carpet and some straps might be an option.

Going away in 9 days, can't wait

Just seen this on Maplin's site, was wondering if it might be just the job for the sink:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/battery-powered-pump-100910

with a bit of piping from the "tap" to our TT tap?

We just spent over 9 weeks away in our pennine and we put our clothes folded in the storage boxes with lids and put them under the bed space under the skirts. As we did not use the awning only the unit we made sure they were away from the front opening as the rian gets through the small space between zip and body. Just moved them over to the outside...perfect.

One His

One hers

One household

one extra food ++++whatever. I like the idea of the stacker type said earlier but then without using the awning they would be no good for us. Good idea though like a chest of drawers so to speak.

Enjoy yourselves, you will with the frame of mind" I'm Going to"

hi

no reason that it won't work apart from finding a bottle/container with the right thread for the top.

Hi JeanWhere did you get your memory foam topper from and what sort of price was it /single or double. Hopefully it will be local as I live in your area.

Hi Zantos, sorry about the late reply, came back from camping trip on Sunday & I'm just catching up on forum threads.

I bought ours from "Onlinebedding4u", an ebay seller. It's a really good quality one which came with a zip-off cover, but it cost £55.19 for a double size. It's really snug & comfy :-)

I picked one up from Argos in their sale last week, it's super king size (which is too big lol) but it was only £38. I've not got it out yet but I think I should be able to cut it down, or maybe it'll just hang over the side. Going away tomorrow :)

Have picked up some piping to fit the pump I got from Maplin, and a second hand aquaroll and waste container for the sink.

Still mulling over whether to pick up one of those cheap kampa porta pottys for the night time, or whether to just take a bucket for emergencys
