A friend has just asked if having bikes on the back of a car is covering your number plate and lights then you need a light board. When towing a trailer do you need two light boards one for the car with the bikes and one for the trailer. I said no you only need to show a light board on the trailer as this is the rear of the car towing the trailer. Could do with this information ASAP as she is leaving for her summer holiday this morning

I have a bike on the back of my bed support which slightly covers the brake light so to be safe I have bought a board to hang on the bikes.

Not so sure about that. As with most laws this is open to interpretation and my understanding is that full or partial obscuration of number plates and lights is illegal whether it is a lone vehicle, towing vehicle or a trailer. That being the case if the car is carrying bikes and any of the lamps or the number plate is partialy obscured a light board must be fitted whether towing or not. Not sure if this would be rigorously enforced over here but I wouldn't want to risk it in France.
