We towed our pennine fiesta with a 1.8 petrol Mondeo (N reg)

Still got the same car towing a 1136kg MTPLM caravan (88% match) with no trouble at all. We would certainly have another but we will go for a larger engine when we need to replace it so`s we can have a larger caravan at some point

Peninne Pullman with a Subaru Legacy 2.0 estate - no problems even with full car load and 4 bikes on the roof (no getting stuck in mud either!)

the best car for towing at a bargain price is a peugeot  605 svtd  auto 2.1 td  it rides and handles like a dream and you can pick one up for next to nothing    fabulous ride handling.mechanical refinement..and very economical for the size of car it has the best rear legroom in its class   you can pick a n plater up for less than a grand

I tow my Conway Cruiser with a Citroen Xantia 1.9i Estate Petrol, tows brilliantly, never had a problem. I can also raise and lower the car for loading and unloading.

Towed across to Vendee last year, 12hours journey door to door, no fatigue at the end of the journey, and the kids weren't fed up either.

We have a citroen Xantia 1.6TD which is a smaller engine than some people have but we still manage to pull the camper without problems.

If we decide in another year to upgrade to a tin tent then we will need to buy a stronger heavier car.

If not we might get a couple of more years out of the old dog yet.

Xantia are not the best for pulling any kind of trailer as they have air assisted suspension which will put strain on the system as a mechanic of 15 years i know this.  i have found the best towing car to be the mondeo 2.0 zetec after extensive research through the caravan and camping club and the internet the power to weight ratio are fantastic the mondeo tdci is also a great pull car too...

Towed my last caravan with a Honda Accord 2.0i petrol. Used it to tow the Conway we had last year as well. Loved the car, towed great. Unfortunately it had to go when I got the motorhome.

Hi Poul & Angela

Have pulled our Penine Sterling from UK to SE FRance and over the Pyranees into Spain every summer with a Citroen Synergie + full roofbox(MPV with three children). Although you may be looking for a car the 1.9TD in the Synergie is a great towing engine, it was the same in your Peugeot and I would recommend it in the future towing car of your choice- as long as you change oil every 6000miles and change cam belt at required interval. They are the no frills European taxi that go on forever into Spain and beyond ... yahoo

i tow my camper with a good old trusty 405 1.9 td estate now and you never know the camper is on the back . 2004 was its first outing and it pulled over the top of the yorkshire moors with no problems at all. the previous car i had and used for towing was a 405 1.9td saloon and never had a single problem in the 6 years that i had it . only changed it for an estate for the extra room . 2005 will be a challenge for it as will be going to yorkshire travel north up to highlands east coast across to west coast and then back down to lake district over a period of time .

all the best in your search and i hope you get what you want in the end . camping season will soon be here.

keiron...
