Has anyone got any decent pictures of a spare wheel carrier for a Conway trailer tent?
It seems whoever bought our tt new decided to get a very good model but didn't want to pay for any of the extras, so I am adding them myself!
I have had a cabinet maker friend of mine make me a front box, it looks a bit too ornate and maybe a little silly but does the job until I can find an original Conway one for a decent price.
I have bought a pair of new wheels/tyres for it as this is cheaper than getting new tyres fitted so this has left me with a spare wheel but no way to carry it!
So, if anyone has a Conway tt with spare wheel carrier (I think it is the under chassis type)could they please send me some decent pics of it so I can think about making my own?
Either that or maybe I'll just drill a couple holes in the chassis 100mm apart, insert a couple of bolts and just bolt the wheel to the chassis, but I worry about effecting the integrity of the chassis that way.
The tt in question is a 2001 model Conway Classic.
Thanks but I've seen that one already. Apparently the one I'm after looks like a triangle.
I never saw it but the missus did when one pulled into the campsite during our holiday last week. I was busy at the time and didn't really want to ask to snoop around under a stranger's tent after they had set it up
I mean, I'm not a weirdo, well, not all the time
We've got the 2004 model but i'm not sure how easy it would be to photograph the underneath without jacking it up :( I can have a look for you and try to get pic's if you want?
Is there a dealer nearby with one for sale that you could go and look at or even on ebay?
I had to show a family around our tt when on holiday this year as they really wanted a tt and loved the look of ours :) I was really pleased and literally dragged them in for a look lol so i'm sure the tt owners wouldn't have minded if you had asked.
Have you looked on the conway owners club as they have diagrams of all the models so you might see one that would help but you may have to trawl through a lot of models to find what you need :(
Thanks for the replies. I'll have a look for dealers in my area but I think they are all caravan places round here.
I know what you mean aswellgirl, my wife dragged in a poor woman from a nice bell tent to have a look round our set-up, even showed her the toilet
We really have got a good set-up, but getting the spare wheel in was a nightmare.
If the conway unit is a bolt on optional extra I would suspect there will already be holes/lugs to attach it to, so I'll have a look next time I'm in the garage.
Any pics would be useful and much appreciated, if it is easier to email them to me then my email address is:

From memory there are two holes about 400mm from the back end of the trailer (without the kitchen) and about 400mm apart. The frame for the wheel is made out of rod (about 6mm in diameter). The rods join to a vertical plate at the back end of the trailer and a similar buckle that holds the kitchen on the back is used to hold the wheel frame on the underneath.

These might not be as elegant as the underslung type, but they make the spare more accessible. Sods law that when you need the spare,it will be wet, dark and cold!
I'm was in a similar situation myself a couple of months ago, but that was for my Cabanon Trailer Tent. I'd managed to find a few photos on the internet which helped me. I finally decided to buy a new wheel carrier, but the pictures might help you as the Conway and Cabanon units seem fairly similar:
I'm afraid that I can't attribute the pictures to their owners as they were collected randomly - so please except my apologies and I will gladly remove them if required.
Thanks everybody.
Think I'll keep an eye out for a second hand one as I expect a new one would be very expensive.
I always wondered what that little tab at the back was for.
I'd looked on eBay for about 6 months before deciding to buy a new one, in all that time I hadn't seen a single one come up second hand (although I'd been looking for Cabanon not Conway).
In the end we ordered it through the Forest Camping Centre in Dorset, I think it cost about £60-£70 in the end.
And to Miserly, I don't mind what it looks like, but I have a front box on mine so only got room underneath the trailer. I don't think the other type can be mounted underneath?
