Hi, love this site and have used it for years during our camping trips, getting lots of help and tips.

We are looking at folding campers, and I've a couple of questions I've not seen asked before.

Are folding campers draughty? It took me years to get my wife to try camping and she loves it :), but the missus does seem to suffer the cold. It doesn't bother me, but she cools down quickly so we have looked into a FC and the fact we could be off the ground with a good built in heater does appeal. The FC's we are looking at are the Pennine/Conway's in particular the Pathfinder / Quartz 4 or 6.

I'm a big boned chap (love my pies) :)

Do the beds have a limit to the total weight that could support 2 people? I cant find any information to say what is the recommended maximum weight limit.

Would a combined weight of 35 stone on one of the beds cause any issues?

Many thanks for any help.
Jon

They are ok draught wise and really quite warm.  There are a couple of spots that do get a little draught (near where the gas struts rest under the canvas once the unit is up) but nowhere near what you can get in a tent and you only notice at all when sat in certain spots on the sofas,  ( a bit of foam lagging or even an old towel perfectly plugs this gap)  Apart from that the bed pod areas are really cosy and, as you are off the floor and on a real mattress, so much warmer than tent air beds.  In addition you have plenty of plugs to run a heater from (if using ehu) and the canvas itself is a lot better insulator than many lightweight tents, warmer in cool weather and cooler in sun.

We moved from tent to FC and would never go back for loads of reasons including the warmth and the set up that copes well with wet weather too.

Sorry just saw your weight questions.  Not totally sure but would not have thought that 35 stone would be a problem, others will be able to add to this but I have a skinny other half (weighs less than me) so not sure.  Would recommend the pathfinder as a great unit to have.

I was 23st .6lbs  when I started toff  this last May BUT we do not sleep on the same bed. Bob slept on the other at 20st.3lb But still aware I was very heavy but wa and am losing it. NO PIES. Now wil always sleep in our own beds unless it was very bitterly cold and iwant mu human hot water bottle back in my bed. But at the combined weight now of 17st.6lbs for Bob and 21 st1lb for me that would make it a conbined weight of 38st. I would not dare trust it.

It is on site here somewhere that someone asked Pennine about the weight they are tested on. They said 12 stone. But would be ridiculous unless it was for  one person only as that is not catering  for 2 people. That was what has been said on site here.As we spent 9 weeks already this year so far without any problem maybe it could be per person so making it 24 stone per bed.Not at all sure but this has been asked before.Just got to find it again. But your conbined weight could well be a problem. As I was 25 stone when  I started slimming world I know what it is like to be heavy. But I think that is too heavy combined together.Sorry but I would not trust it before. Please try to get  some off before the going gets much harder to do. You would get advice here on the search in Leisure general chat thing and slimming world. The older you get the harder it gets. 75 & 67 respectively so we are late starters. No easy but well worth the effort.

Best wishes

Hi,
we had our first trip in our Pullman 535 FC last week, after moving up from tents. It was luxury!

I also asked the weight question as neither of us are under weight but my fears were unfounded, we used the larger bed over the tow bar and it didnt even notice the pair of us, the best week's holiday sleep ever

As for draughts, i could only find one, that was along the joint where the rear bed folds out, there was a 1/4" gap letting in a hurricane, i have since fitted a strip of foam draught excluder strip from B&Q which works perfectly, there can be a slight bit from round the struts but it didnt bother us and we had a couple of cold nights.

For us, the folding camper is the ultimate holiday experience now, more room than a motorhome, permanently made up beds, fast setup and put-down, easy towing, the list goes on...

The front king size bed over the hitch end should be fine and its the bigger end bed , at pretty much the same as a regular double at home (137cm wide I believe). the rear bed is only 122cm wide so weight issues aside you will find it a squeeze regardless with two of you in it. Do look at some of the Trigano 575 or Raclet tamaris models as they have 140cm wide beds both ends which we liked as another option

With that sort of weight on either bed I would ensure that the bed boards and metal surrounds and supports are all in good condition and consider whether to upgrade the support possibly? Saying that our comobined weight is not far short of that and no issues in rear or front beds for us in our near 12 year old Pathfinder

Draughts not rally an issue to be honest as the canvas is velcroed all way round and bed pods have encloseable inners aswell. Use a mattress topper of sorts and decent duvet and you will be toasty at night.

Ours doesn't have in built heater but we may put in plinth heater next year or just use a mini fan heater to provide instant heat or mini oil filled radiator for slower constant (and silent!) heat. To be honest we put a jumper on and haven't used a heater at all yet!

Go and have a look at a few and see what you think. Also consider storage and towing capability of your car. The Quartz6 / Pathfinder are best part of a tonne loaded so ensure you can cope with that. they are also 4.8m long and 2.1m wide so check your garage if thinking of storing indoors as they are still pretty big beasts!

Many thanks for the great replies, we have started the search and will certainly look at the Trigano 575 as well. (any excuse to go to Camperlands to be honest :) )

We also plan to go to the NEC show in Oct to view everything that's on offer and get more ideas.

I'm looking to buy one for next season so will be keeping an eye out for a bargain, plus this gives me enough time to know exactly what I want.

The car is fine for towing, I've got a C4GP this year just for our camping gear, and our 1 year old dog !!! Getting everything in my old Civic which I loved, just put my blood pressure up even using a roof box :D
