We have just got our new car, so now are looking into getting a towbar on it (our previous car was just a temporary thing, so we just got the cheapest towbar we could find).

My hubby thinks that as we are getting a new towbar, we may as well get an alko stabiliser on the Crusader...so, a couple of questions...

1. Do we really need one?  Pennine now fix them as standard on new models, ours is a 2009 and so just missed out on that.  Hubby is thinking about when we drive to france with it next year...will it be a benefit?

2. I seem to remember reading that it is a different size towball than a standard one is this right?

3. Is the stabiliser simple to fit to the camper...ie can we do it ourselves or would we need to get someone to do it for us?

And if there's anything else we need to know?

1. You will probably get varying answers on this one, we have the ALKO 3004 fitted to ours(we drive to France with ours as well ) personally I would not be without it.

2. You need to have an extended neck towball if you fit one, HERE are options. Of course you can buy an original ALKO one at twice the price. Also if you get a kit, it will have the ball with it.

3. The simple answer is yes. Takes 20-30 minutes, it is very easy.

Ok, thanks...so what do we do about getting the towbar fitted on the car?  Do we take the alko towball with us and they fit that for us using the correct fittings for the car?  Or do we just get a standard towbar fitted and then change the ball ourselves?

in answer to your last,yes the alko ball will fit on the standard towbar.if you get the hitch and ball before,i'm sure the fitter will do it at the time of fitting the bar.

or you could have either a swan neck,or detachable type towbar fitted,and these sort work with the alko hitch anyway.although i belive it is possible that some of the detachables don't.

as to needing one fc's don't suffer as badly as caravans when it comes to crosswinds and large veicles passing,but at the end of the day if it gives you a more relaxed happy tow why not?
