My mum bought a TT on ebay last year. She used it twice, then bought a motor home and stuck the TT on ebay. By a fluke the winning bidder happened to be my ex-boss! He then sold it on ebay again, getting back more than he paid for it.

It's all about timing, good pics and good description. I sold a frame tent, trailer and dome a couple of weeks back and they sold more or less straight away.

I think one of the main reasons people gop bid crazy on ebay is that a lot have PAYPAL accounts and if they have spare cash just sitting there, for some its burning a hole in their pockets and as often as not theres not many companies online who take PAYPAL payments. So if theres lots of sellers who accept it then this makes for an ideal situation.I dont think I have ever paid over the odds for anything, ooh except my large vintage Paddington bear(there you are,we all have our moment of madness)

But if I have been tempted so must lots of others, its a sellers market out there sometimes.

I'm thinking about puttong my 5 year old Trigano TT on Ebay, but am a bit chicken!

I can do good pics and a good description, but somebody mentioned good timing. What is good timing? Any hints from you experts out there? I was also wondering about what sort of start price and/or reserve would be the best to go for. I guess you wouldn't want to start too high as it might put people off, but too low and it might never get anywhere. (See some people start at 99p!!!)

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Regards selling on Ebay, the first thing you must do is have a minimum amount you expect, don't be generous, but be realistic. Speak with dealers, tell them you are interested in buying a new model and wondered what you could expect for your model if you sold it private, they will usually give you a realistic idea, don't mention ebay though. Another thing to do is see if the same or similar are going for sale and seeing there prices, if checking similar models on Ebay, the best thing to do is place the item in your watch list and wait for the auction to end, you can then check what it went for, remember people will bid furiously in the last minute of an auction.

Once you have your minimum sell price, you then have to decide whether you want to have a low start price with a reserve for your minimum amount, or a start price for your minimum amount and no reserve. You are charged by ebay for a reserve and I believe for your start price, these charges are on a percentage basis, so it's not worth doing both.

If you use a reserve, you will get a few questions asking what that reserve price is, it is up to you if you let these people know the reserve price. Personally, when I wait for the first enquiry and then 'reply to the question publicly' so everybody can see it. This is because for me, the reserve is just to stop it for selling for less than I want it to and is not a secretive thing.

It is good to state in the description that people are bidding to purchase and not to view, if people wish to view to contact you before the end of the auction. Also stipulate Cash only and on collection.

DO NOT ACCEPT BANKERS DRAFTS OR CHEQUES!, There are serious fraudsters out there that are making a killing with these types of purchases. A friend of mine just got ripped off by accepting a Bankers Draft in exchange for his nice shiny Audi!, the guy even stood there cool as you like in my friends house while he tried to phone and verify if it was genuine!, my friend has had to change his door locks in case the bloke had clocked the contents of his house!.

As for good timing, I can only think that you may want to wait for better weather (people feel more like getting away and camping in good weather) and also when there are not many similar items to yours on sale.

That's about as good as my advice gets.

Thanks for excellent advice, Highside!

Unfortunately, there are LOADS of TTs on Ebay at the moment, and I think people do not realise that some are better quality than others, so are looking to pay bargain basement prices regadless of the model.

Have already spoken to dealers and they have offered very similar amounts. Less than I'd like though. I'm inclined to think that if I can't get a couple of hundred pounds more on Ebay it's not worth the hassle! So I might just put a reserve on a couple of hundred more than the dealers' offers and see what happens.

Anyone know, if you halt the auction early if you sell the item elsewhere, do you still have to pay the reserve fee? It's 2% of reserve price, so ptentially a fair amount of cash!

On the timing question I would suggest, if your selling, then time the auction to end between 7 and 10pm of an evening.  This is the time when most people are in and looking at EBay.  The worst thing that can happen with timing is if your auction is due to end on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon for example after a long wet/cold spell.  I've seen things go ridiculously cheaply on these occasions.  I usually time my auctions to finish around 7pm on a Friday evening and have always done pretty well.

You can see from this that if you want to pick up a bargain look at the time when the auction ends and work out what the likelyhood is of someone else being around to put a bid in.
