The last time we colour coded our awning poles, I used electrician's coloured tape.
I started with the front poles Red (port) for left side, Green (starboard) for right side and white (mast head) for middle pole.
The bottom section of each pole had one band of tape, the next section two bands and so on.
The roof poles had black bands with a band of the colour next to it to match the front poles that they fitted into.
The poles at the front between the vertical poles were therefore colour coded at each end to marry up with the apropriate front poles.
