We had a 2000 Pennine Pathfinder for 3 years and used it a great deal during that time. In the end I got fed up with erecting and collapsing soggy canvas and found I was getting more and more stressed at the prospect of packing it away ( even though it is a relatively simple process). My wife lost interest in it and on our last trip started showing interest in caravans.

We sold the FC for more than we paid for it and decided test the water with a second hand caravan. We were lucky enough to find a really nice one locally at the right price. So far we love it. Feels more like a home from home than the FC and is more comfortable.

There are 4 of us but we went for a 5 berth. We are lucky enough to have space at home to park it out of the way and we have invested in a cover. The FC was parked outside under a cover too as the OH's car lives in the garage.

We do lots of local weekend trips as well as a weeks away in the summer further afield. We don't have a 4x4 just a Passat TDi which copes with the van just fine. Any increase in fuel consumption is nothing compared to what we save by not hopping on a plane. Plus I think the caravan stretches the season a bit by being better insulated etc.

When choosing make sure you get a layout that suits as there is a mind boggling choice and make sure our car will pull it ok.

Caravans are not for everyone - only you can judge if it is for you, we have no regrets.

hi i am thinking of selling my 1993 conway cruiser and getting a 4 berth caravan .. is worth doing

Can't say if it is worth doing exactly for you. but we've had Caravan, folding camper and Gobur folding caravan. Curently have caravan and have never been more comfortable.

Very briefly, to me, the advantages and disadvantages of each seem to be:

Folding camper: Very easy and economical to tow; incredible amount of space for size of trailer; easy to store; fair amount of setting up; limited internal storage space; limited in terms of 4 seaason use; no chance of a couple of hours kip in the services.

Gobur Folding 'van: as above but setting up less but good for 4 season use; comparitively very expensive.

Caravan: Much more wind resistance when towing; as a rough guide take your solo fuel consumption and halve it for towing; more modern 'vans extremely well fitted and comfortable.

Hope this helps.

I've chopped and changed a lot (understatement, some may say) over the last 10 years, for various reasons - 2 Conway FCs, 2 Combi Camps, 3 motorhomes, 6 caravans of different sizes. Not in that order.

Without doubt my favourite is the motorhome - providing it's a modern one with power steering, ABS, turbo diesel engine etc. Unfortunately all mine were old ones and I can't afford a newer one.

But you want caravan versus folding camper.

Everyone has different needs and wants, but I'd always go for the caravan as FCs are no good in cooler months or winter and I like to go camping all year round. Plus I couldn't put the darn things up on my own.

You pays your money and you makes your choice. Good luck in deciding.

As others have said I don't think one is better than the other, it just depends what suits your needs. We have a 1 year old boy and plan for another in the near future. When we had the same decision to make this year this we went for a caravan based on the following:

More internal storage space (we don't travel light with a toddler!), full size shower (ideal for CL sites), heating and hot water can be run on gas or electric, easier to set up, bigger fridge / freezer, warmer than a FC and a longer season (a factor with a 1 yr old).

The price wasn't any difference as we were looking for a van or crusader around 3 years old with an awning and our ranger was nearly the same price as the crusader or used Quartz 6. Insurance was again very similar so not a factor for us.

The "downsides" for us is that we have to pay £30 a month for storage but this might not be a problem for you if you could store it at home. MPG is worse when towing but when you think about it we are going away for 5 seperate holidays next year so will only be making 10 journeys (there and back) towing so this really isn't a massive issue. I knew fuel economy was worse but when you work out how much more it will cost for 10 trips it really isn't a lot and is far outweighed IMO buy the benefits of a van.

As we had also considered a new Quartz 6 I am glad we didn't go for one as I have seen a number of posts on here about problems with the new fabrics.

I still love the FC concept but just don't think it would work for us as a family at the moment. If it was just the two of us then I might have gone for the FC......(but the OH wouldn't give up her shower now)

It seems clear that for cooler weather, a caravan will probably provide a greater degree of comfort ... though many F/C's have heaters nowadays ... we use an oil filled radiator if needed.
However ... we do all our camping on the continent in the summer months ... so the question of warmth is never an issue. With this in mind, the advantages of an FC become more than apparent ... in fact, the canvas is infinitely better in real heat than a caravan ... none of the oven like properties of the latter.
Storage-wise, there's no competition ... caravans won't garage (unless you have a humungously large garage or a spare barn.
We store in France ... in a lock up at 175 euros a year ... saves lots of ferry and towing costs.
