Hi all

We've got a conway challenger 1999 and are in the process of getting it ready for our first trip away.

After getting a new leisure battery i managed to get the whale pump running.

I was told from the people i bought it off that they never used the water system and they had it for at least two years so i'm guessing the water system has not been used for some time.

When i ran the tap a few black flakes came out with water which i suspect is mould.

My question is will milton cleaning fluid dissolve the mould and make the water drinkable?

Thanks

You can clean babies bottles with Milton it has to be alright for  that surely or you would not be using it for little babies. That and finishing with the good old boiling water afterwards.

Maybe others have done it already. I am going by good enough for babes so good enough for older ones.

Don't use Milton as it contains a harsh chemical that will damage internal components and doesn't remove the clinging bacteria in the plastic pipes. The recommended steriliser is Puriclean as it will destroy all known bacteria and thoroughly wash the pipes right out. People think that because Milton is okay for babies bottles etc. it's okay to use for water systems but babies equipment is not standing for long periods in an environment which is breeding bacteria through the winter months which is not visible. Also see the second link direct to their website which explains everything you need to know about bacteria in water systems.

Milton is a sterilising product not a cleaning product. There do be a subtle difference. Puriclean and the Truma chemicals clean as well as sterilise the system and as Tango says Milton has to be used carefully or else it will damage water heaters etc. A few years back I did a test and used milton on the pipes of an old caravan (no water heater) and flushed through thoroughly. I then removed a section of water pipe from near to a tap and pulled a 'plug' of rag through the pipe. To say it looked crap was probably too close to think about. Loads of brown gunge was removed that looked a bit like dead algae. I think the Milton did sterilise the system but it certainly did not clean it. However after a thorough treatment wilth Puriclean masses of gunge came out of the taps when flushing trough. I know what I would prefer to use to clean my caravan pipework......

The puriclean tablets don't actually sterilise the water system, they are what you put in your water barrel just to keep the water tasting fresh that's all. To actually sterise the system you need the sterilising powder which I showed in the link. There is a difference between the powder and tablets if you read the second link and read the different applications.

Having the right product is critical in order to destroy algea, bio-film and other parasites especially if you intend drinking the fresh water from the system as we always do. If not treated with the right application any remains of untreated water could lead to Diarrhea, Hepatitis A or E, Typhoid fever or Cholera so it's important that you use the correct application in order to stay healthy. This information can mean the difference between life or death for someone so although the advice is small it can also be a life saver especially for the elderley and the very young.

Must admit we don't drink the water unless its boiled as well anyway now, but we only use puriclean powder at start of season and maybe once during season now that we are starting our season a buit earlier this year!
