Make sure too that the submersible end of the pump will fit inside your aquaroll or whatever type of water container you are using. The older aquarolls and the newer pumps are different sizes. 

As for a leisure battery, they aren't crucial, we've had a normal car battery in ours for about four years and it's always been ok, even for several days without EHU.  We will eventually put a lesiure battery on but only when the car battery finally curls up its toes but there doesn't seem to be much indication that it will happen soon,

If you have one of the whale submersible pumps, I'm afraid 600mA won't cut the mustard. Have a look at the datasheet which can be downloaded from here: http://www.whalepumps.com/rv/product.aspx?Category_ID=10006&Product_ID=7&FriendlyID=Watermaster

The lowest power unit takes 2.9A, almost four times the output of your transformer. To be honest, I'd be very surprised indeed if any water pump with an appreciable flow rate would run off 600mA (for any length of time!).

Obviously, it's working now, but almost certainly something will blow when you can least do without the pump.

If you want to buy a battery, then get a leisure one. As Claydoncmaper says an old car battery will do fine, especially if you are only running the water pump, but if buying new it makes sense to get the leisure battery. These are built with thicker plates and designed to survive complete discharges, which a car battery often won't.

To be fair, the fact the the lack of a batterycharger wasn't mentioned at the time of sale cannot really be blamed on the seller. In most cases the charger unit is not a standard fitment, so having one is a bonus. Our Fiesta just has a battery and EHU, and I keep the battery on permanent trickle charge at home.
