Since having our Conway Countryman for a year we have always had some difficulty attaching the electric hookup to the camper end. Sometimes it would somehow come lose and the electrics would switch off. The lead came with our camper which is now  2 years and was serviced when we bought it.

The electrics have never tripped. This weekend the electrics went off again as soon as I switched on the halogen oven. I checked the cable and pushed it back in and heard a sizzling noise and took it off again and there was a smell and what looked like a bit of smoke.  One of the metal connectors could not be seen in one of the holes. I was worried that the electrics had had it but there seemed nothing wrong with the connections or wires in the camper. We ended up buying a new hook up lead and everything has been fine since.

Do hook up cables often fault? The oven used was well below the 16 amps so this could not have been the problem could it?

If there was a problem with the electrics surely it would have tripped the fuse board or the campsite hook up.

Because they are frequently connected and disconnected they are prone to loose connections causing problems especially when people pull on the cable to disconnect.

The oven would cause no problem.

I have never heard of anyone having a problem with an electric hook up cable before although it can't be ruled out completely. Obviously if it was loose to start with then there must have been a connection problem but as the trip didn't activate you though it was still safe to use. Basically the cable should have been discarded for safety reasons alone or at least replaced the offending plug. Although there a trip switch to avoid any on board circuitry damage it could have however caused a fire within the connection plug itself which could have caused damage to your unit. It sounds like one of the brass pins had come loose making a dodgy connection and that was probably what the sizzling sound was you heard. However if a fire had started due to a poor connection then your insurance may have refused to pay out because you were actually aware of the fault.

sounds like a bad connection you can also solve this as a repair by replacing just the faulty connecter at a cost of around £2-£3 or the connection on the unit that would cost a little more

There have been a couple of posts on this subject in the last couple of years. The best advice is to change both the socket on the end of the lead AND the inlet plug,as a loose connection that has caused enough heat to damage one will probably damaged both. You may be lucky though if the loose connection was at the terminals and not on the pins themselves.Go to an electrical wholesaler for the  connectors, camping shop prices are a bit high. This kind of fault does not cause rcd or mcb tripping,so can creep up on you! When replacing, solder the leads first to give a better connection, and cut back the cables until you see bright copper, avoiding reusing heat hardened cables.

The very first hook up we had was faulty :( The very first time we used it it blew and wouldn't work. We took it back to the shop who said it was probably from a bad batch.

We use to get this problem in the Theatre all the time with the same blue 16amp connectors that Caravans an FC use. So many of the sockets are mass produced in china that the quality control is not amazing and the holes were just a bit too big. Not a problem with a small load like a light or a small TV but a large draw such as an oven (or large amplifiers in my case) can cause the loose pin to arc which is why it goes black, fizzles and smells. There is very little danger of the plug catching fire but still way to much of a risk to leave unsorted. If anyone is having buzzing on your van stereos or lots of fuzz on TV then its worth checking the mains lead as this can also be a sign that its starting to go( as well as being annoying)
