Have you posted on the conway owners' site? If you search the threads on there for 'winding mechanism' it should bring it up  - it can be fixed. Have the cables come off the tensioners or has the place where the mechanism is fixed to the floor rotted? Either way it can be done, somewhere on the conway owners' site i think someone even did a pic by pic account of how. In the mean time it also says on there what dimensions the piece of wood need to be to hold the roof up while you get fixing it sorted.

Once it is fixed you need to remember that after winding the roof down and fastening the clips, you have to wind back up just a half turn or so to keep the cables tensioned, and use the socks on the 'pillars' to stop rain getting down them and rotting the floor around the mechanism.

I hope you can get it sorted simply
