Hi

Looking to sell my raclet jasmin and buy camplet just got completely fed up with the time it takes to put up awning .

I have been looking at recent ones but have seen a few available from early 2000's.

Can any one help me in identifying the issues I need to consider only it seems to me that if I reproof canvas I could have a decent tent for a fraction of the cost.

Am I missing something?

Thanks

Ian

Canvas is the biggest thing,as with any tent, theres not that much else to them. Spares are still available, though accessories such as sun canopies may not fit pre 2005 models. The more basic ,the better, the Apollo has a more sensible door arrangment than the Concorde. Not much point in proofing if the canvas is sound, unless you spend a lot of time abroad when the uv protection is needed, wait to see if it leaks first. If it has been proofed, find out which proofer was used and stick with it every few years.PS. They don't go up as quick as you think, and they are a pig on uneven ground too. The beds are not good without adding slats, and you have to get in from the end. The kitchens are a bit silly, with no grill, and a 3 burner hob with room for 2 pans, but all in all,we like ours, and wouldn't go back to a big traditional tt.

I had a camplet from about 1990 back in 2005 and it was in pretty good condition. Check the tyres, the kitchen pole (which might be kinked, but this is repairable), and any canvas repairs. Mine was still watertight and I didn't bother reproofing. It did me fine for a good few years. The only thing is the older ones don't have gas struts so can need 2 to open the lid. Not a big issue really .

I'd rather be camping

But,if you have a look on our FB group page you will see a photo of a 90's camplet with a gas strut, can be done. It's the bedroom hoop that gets kinked on the kitchen pole, and as Jo123 says ,easy fix (been there) . Doesn't happen on older Apollos.

We bought our Camplet Concorde in April for £450.  It's 20 years old and in fabulous condition.  Hubby is Mr DIY and there were a couple of repairs; a crack in the fibreglass of the kitchen; the rack needed removing sprucing up, and all the bolts (or whatever) replacing; various of the elastics had 'gone', and the kitchen pole was bent (what a surprise!)  We got all the spares from Camperlands who whilst virtually impossible to get hold of, were vey helpful when we did!

We replaced the cooker with our 2 ring one, bought bed slats from Ikea (£40 I think) and a mattress topper from Dunelm Mill (£24 in the sale).

We didn't know if the canvas had been re-proofed or not so went camping in the heavy rain!  It did leak quite a bit in places, but once it all dried it's obviously resealed itself or something, as it's not leaked since.  The canvas is definitley the biggest 'worry'.  They're built to last and they do!
