I have a Cabanon Neptune trailer tent which is very large and the beds we will be using are raised off the ground by some 3 feet. The kitchen is designed to be used inside the main room which is some 5 metres by 2.5 metres. It has come equipped with a butane regulator but it runs a bit cold. I was going to swap the regulator to a propane regulator and use my BBQ 13kg patio gas cylinder.
My wife's Auntie and Uncle who are French, have camped all of their lives and now own a camper van have told me that it is not safe to use propane inside and that i would have to use butane. I don't believe this and have had a look around the web and cant find anything specific.
I will be using the outfit in France where the temperature can get a lot higher than in the UK.
I really want to know whether or not this will be safe as there will be my wife and 2 daughters aged 10 and 6 to consider.

It makes absolutely no difference.

In terms of safety, both are heavier than air, so both will suffocate you in the same way as CO if allowed to accumulate and both will explode given half a chance. Propane is simply a higher pressure. As you have mentioned, it has a much lower boiling point so the cylinder won't ice up.

One thing to note though is that Butane has a substantially higher calorific value than Propane, so you get more heat out of it. As you are going somewhere warmer, I would think that you would be better of sticking with Butane. And make sure you have enough as you can only get Camping Gaz in France!

Cheers,

Simon

Thanks Simon. You have pointed out that my fundamental reason for switching was wrong and that butane gives more heat than propane. With that in mind I shall stick to butane which will have the added benefit of having my wifes' aunt and uncle think they have had a beneficial influence and make them happy.

As someone has said, you can only get Camping Gaz in France which although butane, has a different fitting from Calor.  One of these will screw into a Gaz bottle and the other end will take your butane pigtail.
