Hi Folks, Been a while since I was last on the
forum. We have just returned from a week in Oban with the trailer, and we had
both great weather and poor weather. I noticed that the canvas was letting in
some water at different areas whilst it was raining, and as we were getting
packed up to come home, the heavens opened and tonight is the first time I have
had to get the canvas all opend up to dry and air it. Can anyone reccomend a
product and a how the best way to apply to put a water proof coating back on the
canvas. Thanks Mo
Fabsil is good - it's not cheap though. We had a 5 litre tin and bought one of those garden sprayers (i paid the ridiculous price of £20 from the local garden centre but you can get them for £7.99 in our B&M Bargains) .The 5 ltr tin did our awning with plenty left over so you might need 2 tins. You will also need to make sure it's clean as the fabsil won't work where it is dirty or has had any kind of detergent on it.
Really easy job, presumaby you've got space to have the whole thing up and pegged out. You will need a step ladder to do the roof though and you will have to do it every few years once you have done it but if there is still life in it then it's definitely worth doing.
Thanks for the advice, as the bed section is the worst bit, I have ordered a 1lt tin of fabsil and have a 1ltr spray bottle in the shed. I have got the whole trailer opened out in the drive drying and airing it off, so all going well the fabsil should be here for the weekend and I can do it then.
I used Thompsons Water Seal on the last trailer I reproofed.
It says 'for brick, concrete & wood' on the tin - but it's fine on canvas as well.
Seems exactly the same as Fabsil, to me - same smell, same consistency, same silicone base and spirit carrier.
I've used plenty of Fabsil in the past, and the Thompsons did exactly the same job - but was cheaper. I'd lay money that, side by side, you couldn't tell the difference between them.

Thompsons is no longer reccomended for canvas. The new formula has changed and therefore may not be suitable. I would stick with fabsil.
Ah, changed it have they? - fair enough.
As far as I can remember, they stated 'canvas' on the tin - but that was a few years ago.
Shame, because it was every bit as good as Fabsil, and almost half the price ;)
Wickes still do a spirit based sealer btw. Stinks and will probably darken the canvas, but that may be a good thing. New Thompsons is water based I think,so no good.
