We got our new trailer tent last weekend, but sadly took the decision not to stay overnight in it on the sat as it was awful weather. We are hoping to stay somewhere close to home this saturday. I was checking out camping reviews of a local site and was surprised to see that in the website that trailer tents are shown as being under the caravan and campervan area and the grassy field for tents only - is this normal?
I guess we still wish to identify ourselves as campers! Also I have never stayed on a hardstanding area before: I guess drainage could be better and access to EHU for off season camping would be a positive. Is it advisable to take a footprint to protect my lovely brand new camplet bucket ground sheet? I also have a breathable groundsheet and was planning to use this as a carpet.

My next question - do most people keep their gas bottle inside or out of their tent? Our hose is long enough to allow us to do this apparently. I have never used a big gas bottle before!

We really feel we have a lot to learn here, towing the trailer tent home with us last saturday was a bit of a learning curve!

Thanks Karyn

Hard standing is not nice, but sometimes you have to use it,extra protection's a good idea. Be aware that sites don't always specify the type of hard standing,so you may end up on a concrete slab,no good at all. C&C Cub sites are guilty of this, but in most cases all units can choose grass or hs.  My gas goes behind the cooker before opening the unit, easier to connect ehu and gas before the canvas is in the way. Some sites, including club sites have a max gas bottle size, when you say big.

Being surrounded by caravans can be a pain too, some ,not all by any means, vanners have no idea how noisy they are, whereas us civilised types tend to be quieter.

We have a trailer tent - and I always book in as a large tent so we get a grassy pitch.

We keep our small gas bottle inside the tent.

We went away for BH weekend to a site that we had been too before in our dome tent adn always loved. We now have a Raclet Quickstop and on arrival were shown to a pitch amongst all the caravans. Tents are no longer allowed in this field and are now further away from the toilets than ever! Bizarre! The whole feel of the site had changed and all caravans are sited all year round, so everyone knew everyone which meant everyone gathered in the caravan behind us and were very loud till the early hours. No fun when you've got a little'un.

Seems to me this particular campsite has changed it's business ethos which is a shame as we always loved going there. Will have to find a new favourite now in the Brecon area.

Our tent would be of on a hardstanding, however we prefer to be on grass and in amongst all the campers!

The hard standings we use in the caravan are stone chippings. Difficult to peg in so we have to use rock pegs. I would imagine they would muck up a ground sheet. We don't use one on a hard standing and just have the stone chippings as the floor. I wouldn't like to use a tent on it.

We've never pitched on hard standing and I don't think I would want to. The sites we use count us as a tent.

Hi
From my experience or lack of it (this week end) for god sake take plenty of 3" square blocks for the legs/ jockey wheel on wet ground. It will also help to level up the camplet easier............... Oh and stop the bed legs sinking into the soil in wet conditions!!!

Since changing to a TT a year ago and joining the Caravan Club, we always choose a hardstanding now and prefer it to grass. They are often (but not always) more level than a grass pitch. We do have an awning-sized heavy duty tarp that goes under the zip-in groundsheet and a carpet that goes on top, so it is quite comfortable to walk on.

As for the gas, we have a front sun canopy and windbreak arrangement where the cooker and gas bottle live (picture in profile) so there's no gas inside the trailer or awning.

Put your gas hose over the kitchen hinge bit and the gas bottle will sit under cover of the canvas and you can get to turn it on and off as needed without it being in the way inside the Camplet.

I don't have a bucket groundsheet, you could always not use it on the hardstanding if you're worried about damaging it, I quite often don't bother with a groundsheet though have yet to try on muddy ground as have either had good weather or a hardstanding.
