I've just taken my renovated 50/60's unique camping trailer into trailor specialist to fit new suspension units. I was informed that it would need to conform to new forthcoming MOT regulations and I could not use original Mini wheels and tyres, that I would need to fit a fog lamp to rear and various other mods to comply. As it isn't yet in force i vetoed the new wheels and tyres and opted only for suspension and new jockeywheel.
I then surfed the internet for inforamtion on this subject but could find little of use. For instance, will there be excemptions for antique/vintage trailers/caravan/TT etc or will this be the death knell of older interesting trailers? Anyone with any knowledge of this?

Unless anyone knows different there are no plans for a trailer MOT. There are construction and use regulations but as far as I'm aware these are not applied retrospectively, i.e. if it was legal when the trailer was built it's legal now.
Not sure about any MOT thing, but as far as I know, the bit about the Mini wheels is probably to do with the brakes. If a trailer is fitted with brakes, they must work, even if it is below the 750kg limit for requiring brakes.
If yours is unbraked, but fitted with Mini wheels, it's technically illegal I believe, but as glen_p points out, the rules may not be applied retrospectively.
It's unbraked and circa 1960 and even has the original mini hubcaps. I am striving to keep it as near as original as possible, All wheels have brand new mini tyres (not cheap) fitted and all is now fit for purpose. The only reason that I put into the specialists was that the original suspension was shot and fitting new units required equipment, ramp and skill i do not have. Then they threw me that MOT curved ball! Even want to change the perfectly servicable original jockey wheel.. That and original tow hitch are next stage of restoration.

These seem to suggest that, as your trailer was manufactured significantly before 1983, the braking regs don't apply, but there's far to much legalese there for me to be sure...
Thanks SiHa. Have read and reread it and am no wiser! However I will pursue this although I'm not getting any further. This has serious implications to all owners of vintage trailer (I have two) including Rapido, Dandy and Creighton Binns to name but a few.

So someone waqs trying to get more money out of me. The job still hasn't been done even though they have had the unit sinse Monday afternoon. It's now Thursday morning! It's only 12 bolts and maybe a bit if adjustments. I should have done the job myself but thought it may be best with the professionals. Not happy about the increased angst and the bullsh*t.

update, Went to see them this morning and turns out that, while they had pair of mini hubs in stock for mini wheels, one of them was minus the bearings. Asked why no feedback to customer and was eventually molified but still have no trailer. Maybe tomorrow?
