We have been toying with the idea of a FC for over a couple
of years now and finally bit the bullet (and spent twice as much as I had
originally planned!) and purchased a 2011 Pennine Quartz 6.
Have been very excited about picking it up on Friday, but
now I’m starting to feel with dread. It
has an ALKO stabiliser fitted (1300 I think) our car is a Discovery 2 TD5. We
have had the new towball fitted and new 13pin electrics but I have been reading
about hitching problems with cars that have the spare wheel on the back door. Also been reading about having to clean the
towball and hitch before and after each trip plus some other nightmare stories regarding
the ALKO hitch.
Am now beginning to think I should have done a bit more
research before parting with my hard earned cash.L
We are totally new to FC and camping in general so any
advice will be greatly received.
Have really enjoyed reading through the threads on the
forum.
Some very good advice on here but have to admit my head is in a bit of a spin with it all.
As long as you are not a youngster,I can't imagine a better tow car! Certainly the towball needs to be clean but Alko is a well regarded make. As for paying twice what you had in mind, welcome to the club!
Sadly no, I don't think we can be classed as youngsters anymore! Young at heart but not on paper.
We use to use the Disco to tow the horse trailer which it did very well. It was the hitch I was concerned about with the spare wheel on the back door. Would hate to get there and find we have to keep taking the wheel off.
Our original plan was to buy an older cheaper one to see if the fc thing was for us then if it was then upgrade to a newer older one. Well all that went out of the window and we ended up buying this one! I do really like it and can't believe I am already wishing the year away so we can start using it.
I know how you're feeling - we are picking up our first caravan on Saturday and have the same panic issues as you are having :-( had the towbar and electrics changed and hope that we are doing the right thing!!!
I have set up a facebook page if you use facebook to try and get people together to chat and meet up if you're interested.
I have had an Alko stabiliser hitch for some time and had no problems, the ball needs to be dry, clean and free from grease if used only with the stabiliser hitch then there should be no problems and it does not need cleaning each time I use it. It would be an issue if using the same ball with standard hitches as this will add grease to the ball and it will need completely de greasing before used with the stabiliser.
Spare wheels that over hang the tow ball may prevent the actuating lever from going into the vertical position, I believe Alko do an adapter/alternative lever if this is a problem. Provided the lever is open sufficient to hitch then it will probably be ok. In normal running the lever is horizontal and would not be a problem. You need to be aware that the hitch requires a ball with a long neck, Alko give the dimensions, most swan necks I think are ok but standard bolt ons are not. Towsure and others sell the right type of ball.
I fitted my stabiliser hitch after owning a Pennine Pullman for six months and found it to be a real benefit, would not want to tow a large trailer without one.
Ha Ha Miserly – stop it! I am so
easily persuaded!We haven’t got
everything we need yet but I can’t see us holding out until March.
Thanks BERTIE will check out the facebook
page.I’m glad I’m not the only one
feeling like this – it’s all a bit daunting.
That was very reassuring Old Bob, thank
you.We had the towbar changed when we
had the electrics upgraded – luckily they asked if the hitch was an ALKO.
Clbewi – I’m not sure it’s that simple as I
think the Jockey wheel gets in the way. Friday will tell J
Thank you all- what a lovely place this forum
is J
My Honda CRV has the wheel on the back door and i have a Pennine Pathfinder with Al-Ko 1300 and there is no issues ,ther is a special towball for the alko hitch which as a longer kneck ,or a swan kneck towball is ok
Thanks for all the input. Had no issues hitching whatsoever. Athough think we may have to drop the towbar on the Disco as the camper was quite nose high.
Yep had to drop the hitch on our disco as well, as we tow a trailer too, I opted for an adjustable sliding hitch plate, up for the trailer and down for the camper.
