hi there
just a quickie.. ive got a new car and no spare wheel and want to purchase one. was just wondering if anyone new what the rules are on weather you can tow with a spacesaver or not?
If you are towing a caravan or trailer and get a puncture then it is generally OK for a space-saver spare to be fitted to any axle on the car. check the handbook though as there might be vehicle-specific advice.
With the skinny-spare fitted you must drive straight to a tyre specialist for a repair/replacement rather than attempt a long journey.
There is another post on here and someone said you just take your car into the garage and they will give you a wheel, personally not too sure about this though, it is a optional extra on some cars and costs a lot for a full size spare, some say its illegal etc, not sure on that either, as they wouldn't be allowed to supply them with the car if that was the case.
I'd check what the cars manual says first, as it might be ok, a space saver wheel is just for temporary use so that you can the wheel repaired though.
Legally you don't need a spare. But if you have one, it must be in good roadworthy condition.
It is really a good idea to have one. Even if you don't intend changing it yourself. At least if you get a puncture, you will be delayed by the time it takes to get someone to change it, rather than actually getting hold if a wheel or having to tow car and caravan to z garage who may or may not have a tyre available
