Chris looking at that list, the avensis or the mondeo would get my vote. VWs although good, are over priced hense you looking at older models. The vectras have week gearboxes so not great for towing. Fords do have documented dual mass flywheel issues but its not a deal breaker. The Toyota is a bit soulless but the extra torque from 2.2 would certainly be a bonus.

What is better a manual ar an auto box?

On a 2.0 plus you should be fine with either - so go with what you prefer

I prefer auto for everyday driving anyway although manual isn't actually an option on my model

We tow with a VW passat Estate (2005) ... Pullman (loaded to limit), bike rack, roof box and loaded estate plus three people.
Absolutely no problems ... on VERY steep hills, have to go into third ... but that's very rare.

If you have a meriva and are happy how about a deisel zafira our 1.9 tdi is great.

1.8 petrol golf gti manual, skoda fabia 1.4 diesel estate manual and 2.0 diesel dodge journey auto. All have pulled our Trigano really well. The skoda is surprisingly good for a 1.4 and very cheap to run.

We had a Renault scenic 1.6 fully loaded with 4 bikes just about managed to tow are trigana tc. Just bought vauxhall astra 1.8 petrol estate 140bhp auto hopefully this should be easier. Make sure the car has the right tow weight for your unit. It's hard to find a family car which is good for ever day use and for towing.we did not want a mondeo or vectra because the boot are to big to reach in for my short arse wife.

citroen picasso 1.6 hdi 110bhp version will tow that without even knowing its there and still return 50+ mpg .
