Imagine the alarm... what's that stuck to the bottom of the cupboard door? Erk-alors! Its - I can't believe it - a woody fruiting body of a fungus... feeding on what? Further investigation: the vinyl coating on the inside of the tail wall is 'bobbly' and a press with the fingers indicate soft decay beneath. So, the whole tail wall is under mycological attack and needs replacement. A visit to the Pennine website to check on prices leaves me reaching for the oxygen mask. Has anyone recently had a go at fabricating a wall with marine or external ply? Does anyone know what Pennine use?
I also find that the rear corner of the floor is rotting. Sigh. The thought of perhaps having to completely deconstruct the unit scares me. I hope when I start to uncover and strip that the floor damage is mendable. Does anyone have experience or advice?
Does anyone know what sealing SHOULD be in place under the floor - it doesn't look like it has much of anything applied to it.

Hi j hodjson, funny you should mention this as I noticed on my pathfinder this weekend, the outer walls of the camper at the bottom sit on a L shape aluminium strip. And the part that lips up the outer wall has a mastic joint at the top, which is far from useless. On inspection I managed to lift the sealed joint away from the Ali strip indicate a spot for water to run into and lay, then most probably be soaked up by the walls.
The aluminium strip should have been pumped with mastic the stuck on ,not just a mastic joint across the top, given that the metal shrinks and expands probably quite a bit and breaks the joint.
I'm not 100 per cent sure about your model but when you come to repair make sure you check this as this is the only way I can see a wall or floor can rot.

The good people at Pennine have got back to me to offer a piece of ply ready bonded with the stucco aluminium outer and the pvc or vinyl inner coating.
However they no longer have the jig to cut the board to the pattern for a 2003 Fiesta, so I would have to cut it myself. Many Pennines seem to rot (I am seeing the evidence in photos of units for sale and in renovated units with walls replaced, say the details)This leads me to predict that they do not build with marine ply - for sure - decent marine ply has a 15 year guarantee. (High quality core, no voids, WBP glue, high price)
In fact I don't think that they even use exterior grade ply (lower quality woods, fewer plies, risk of more voids, WBP glue, more moderate price).
I believe they use poplar plywood. This is commonly used for caravans. Websites tell me this is chosen for its lightness. It's 2 thirds the weight of pine ply. Marine ply uses hardwoods so will be heavier still.
It is also inexpensive. To be used in external applications it must be properly protected. Any water ingress will be soaked up... leading to the problems I'm having. What is critical is to have all edges properly sealed.
Although the price Pennine quoted is much more reasonable, if I am going to the trouble of repair, the time spent is the biggest investment, so I can't make up my mind what to do.
OPTION 1 - order the Pennine panel. Drive to Lancashire. (200 mile round trip) Pick up. Cut it to shape and do a mega superb job at sealing all edges. Cross fingers.
OPTION 2 - order 18mm marine or external ply locally. Do as above. Salvage outer white painted aluminium stucco from old panel and glue on. Source pvc bonded sheet to glue on... or just paint the interior. Much cheaper. More work. Gambling on being able to strip off the old stucco and reuse. I have found Alu-stucco for £50, but not painted white.
Regarding your unit Mr T - DO ACT on where water can get in. Mushrooms belong on a plate, not growing out of your trailer.

Do you really have to use Alu-stucco? As this is the rear panel I don't think a smooth finish would look out of place. You could go for Glassfibre pre bonded on to ply as use on commercial vehicles.

These guys appear to have depots through out the UK

Yeah I'm hoping to act on this ASAP as soon as I spotted it, I knew this will become a problem.
For me I would do this myself as I'm a carpenter/ builder. But and the big but is having a dry area to do this in.
Just watch out for cheap ply as they do blow and on recent times I've used ply its not stuck together well at all.
Marine ply or piranha which are heavy and expensive used for roofing.
I'm sure on here or somewhere some has replaced a side wall showing a step by step from start to finish

Thanks all - seen the replaced side walls thread. So it is do-able. Mine HAS to be done of course - I have normal DIY skills but am time poor. Frightened of starting and finding more and more wrong... but hey-ho, will spread over several weekends once I've decided on method and materials. I have been researching the marine ply idea and have come across very varied reports of quality of products.
Any builders out there have confidence in ply from any of the nationwide outlets: B&Q ? Travis Perkins ? Jewsons? MKM?

No problems b and q is also expensive as its a DIY outlet, though sometimes they do beat magnets for plaster and plasterboard, with buy so many get one free.
But as for timber go to a proper timber merchants ask for trade if you can ( best price, never pay top whack) always ask for better price.
I know the exterior ply we used a little while ago delaminated, not good.
The quality of a lot of stuff these days is very poor.
But also make sure you seal the grain ends of the ply with either a good waterproof pva or something similar, as this is where water gets in and rots/ delaminates.
Good luck.

Grim gets grimmer.
Oh dear. Spent an afternoon removing cupboard and drawers to find the following:
Rot not only in tail wall. Also in side walls by at least a foot and at least one corner of the floor. I don't know if it will be possible to patch repair somehow the side walls by cutting out (again somehow) the rotten part of the side panels. I know it is always best to do a COMPLETE and proper repair, but with a continental camping holiday booked in 6 weeks I worry about biting off more than I can chew. Does anyone think it's possible to part repair or is it just a bodge too far? Is it even possible to do it this way?
As for the tail board, when I removed the lights, there was water inside both lights and the left hand cable hole through the tail panel was wringing wet. The cable hole is the epicentre of the rot!
The cable grommet, such as it is, was short, sliced, and provides no protection to the plywood at all. There appears to be a sodden brown paper sleeve through the hole which helps wick any rain outside into the interior of the ply. So methinks that this pathetic access point might be the source of all my woes.
The thought that a simple bit of mastic/epoxy/proper grommet would stop water ingress and damage echoes the adage: a ha'porth of tar....
Pennine manufacture - take note! A new Fiesta is £11k a grommet is 11p. Owners take note! Check your rear lights.
