Hi I'm wondering what your thoughts are re pulling a conway cruiser with a 1.4 vauxhall meriva. It legally can to up to 1000kg and the camper unladen is 670kg. My thinking is we could not store any extra in the camper and put everything in the boot and roofbox. We don't want to change the car unless we need to. What I'm more concerned about is we have three children so the car is full before we pull a camper.Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I towed for the first time tuesday so am no expert in these matters what I would say is rather than a weight issue its the physical size I used my golf 1.9 tdi which has lots of power but the fc is physically a big old beast mirrors are null and void also when braking you feel its presence the meriva is quite a small car and with all the stuff kids etc you're talking about??? This is going to put a lot of stress on your car. If I could change my car for something a little bigger like an a4 estate I would in an instant jj

I would say it is fine. I tow a cardinal with a Nissan note same size car and same weight as your cruiser and it pulls it well. the only issue you might have is going up hills you might have to use the gearbox more.go here to try out your set up

I have a 2011 Pennine quartz 2+2 and the new shape Meriva 1.4 and I have no problems at all . Granted my FC is lighter than yours but ipack mine up and the only issue I do have is up very steep hills I have to change down to first gear usually and crawl up or my engine screams at me if I go any faster. I was originally thinking about the cruiser or crusader but I played it safe and went for the quartz2+2. I do also use a roof box for extra space you could think about that for the bulky lighter items.

The maximum tow weight is the maximum it can pull away with on a 1 in 10 or 1 in 8 hill without doing damage to the cars transmission. Putting all the weight in the car will make no difference to this as the car must still pull away with it. The gross train weight is the critical measure. That is the loaded weight of the whole outfit. and having the car full will not make this more.

The other consideration is the balance of weight between the camper and the car. It is recommended the weight of the trailer is not more than 85% of the weight of the car. This is to stop it snaking. In practice, many drivers will tow a caravan over this weight, but they are able to balance the weight distribution in the caravan easily. This means getting the weight low over the axle and getting the correct nose weight to ensure the outfit is stable.

FCs unfortunately are not good for getting good weight distribution as things have to be put where they will fit in the limited space available when folded.

The other thing to consider is that the 1.4 Meriva is already a big lump to move with a 1.4 petrol engine and diesels are much better at towing than petrols as they have more torque.

Having said all that this report from whattowcar gives it a good match.

You need to carefully check all the figures

If you fill its presence of the fc more than you should you mit need the brakes checked. Hope you use towing mirrors big fine is you get caught with out them as the unit is wider than your car. Other thing I do is only fill the fuel tank 3/4 full I find this helps a lot with weight when towing.

Hi C.G
I currently tow a cruiser with a 1.4 civic, but it is the older model 750k max weight.
As mentioned earlier ,it makes little difference whether you load in the camper or car your car still has to pull it.
An idea maybe to find a public weighbridge nearby the next time you go away and weigh the camper car and kids with all the kit you are taking and see how that compares to the cars train weight (displayed on the drivers door nameplate)
If you don,t want to change cars ,you have to think about the weight you are taking with you ie
Don,t take food buy it when you get there.
Can you manage with just the one gas bottle
Can you manage without a leisure battery going on hook up
Do you use the large table as a bed ,can this be replaced with a smaller lightweight table.
Have you thought about using a lightweight porch awning?
As mentioned earlier don,t fill the petrol tank to the top.
Another more drawn out way, is to weigh everything you are taking including people and clothes and see if you exceed the vehicle train weight.
load the unit up, with the gear and people and go for a test tow.Find a few hills and see how the unit performs
you will soon tell.
hope this helps   GCB

We towed a Cardinal (two in fact - but only one at a time!!) with a 1.4 Renault Scenic.  I'd have to agree with cruiser bob on the hills - going up steep ones was a pain.  Other than that it was fine.
