We have a conway cruiser and are going away tomorrow overnight to try it out before Cornwall in two weeks time. We went to gooutdoors a couple of weeks ago to get a gas bottle. We didn't know which to get but the sales assistant said we can have either propane or butane. He then gave us the red bottle (propane I think). My husband has just checked the pipe etc fits onto the bottle but it doesn't. We are baffled. Is it the blue bottle we need? Also should we get a full refund if we need to change it?
Ah right thank you. We are completely clueless. I just wish the man at gooutdoors had informed us of that. Need to get the butane one tomorrow before going. Thank you for your help.
The regulator should be the same colour as the gas cylinder which is either blue or red so as your propane cylinder is red just check that the regulator you tried to connect it to is blue. The reason why they don't fit is because the butane (blue) regulator has a female thread that connects to a male thread on the cylinder whereas the propane (red) regulator has a male thread that connects to a female thread on the cylinder and this done because butane and propane operate at different pressures so it's impossible to connect the wrong one for safety reasons.
If your unit has the regulator fixed to the back panel, you will need the appropriate connecting pipe, not a new regulator. It was about the 2003 / 2004 models where it changed I believe.
Lots of advice on here but there are 3 or 4 different types of blue regulators- I know this because I have all of them having bought the wrong ones to fit my gas bottles.
You have confessed you are clueless (as am I and I know there are different regulators) I would take your bottle with you to the shop to make sure you get the right one.
Have a lovely holiday.
I know this is a few days old but here goes anyway.
Lots of advice here involves changing the regulator, which involves breaking the fixed part of the gas connection. I'd advise against it. OK, it's relatively easy to check for leaks, but if you're not confident I'd steer well clear.
Given that yours didn't fit a propane cylinder, I'm assuming you have one of these regulators on your cruiser:
The top one will fit a 4.5kg Butane cylinder, and the bottom one a 7.0kg one. I'd imagine you need the 4.5, that's what we have two of in our Fiesta.
Hopefully they will let you swap as you bought on their advice. If they argue saying that you could have used some gas, see if they can weigh it:
The weight of a full cylinder should equal the weight of the empty cylinder in lb/oz (stamped onto the tare ring around the valve) plus the stated weight of the gas (3.9/4.5/6.0/7.0 kg) -0/+4 oz.
So a 3.9kg propane, with a cylinder weighing 12lb 12oz (5.8kg) should weigh 9.7kg -0g/+110g when full.
