I know this is a few days old but here goes anyway.
Lots of advice here involves changing the regulator, which involves breaking the fixed part of the gas connection. I'd advise against it. OK, it's relatively easy to check for leaks, but if you're not confident I'd steer well clear.
Given that yours didn't fit a propane cylinder, I'm assuming you have one of these regulators on your cruiser:

The top one will fit a 4.5kg Butane cylinder, and the bottom one a 7.0kg one. I'd imagine you need the 4.5, that's what we have two of in our Fiesta.
Hopefully they will let you swap as you bought on their advice. If they argue saying that you could have used some gas, see if they can weigh it:
The weight of a full cylinder should equal the weight of the empty cylinder in lb/oz (stamped onto the tare ring around the valve) plus the stated weight of the gas (3.9/4.5/6.0/7.0 kg) -0/+4 oz.
So a 3.9kg propane, with a cylinder weighing 12lb 12oz (5.8kg) should weigh 9.7kg -0g/+110g when full.
