Hi all
Have recently bought a 2002 Pennine Sterling 510Se and since initial viewing it has been stored on the site where I initially saw it so I don't have ready access to it.
We will be going down next weekend for our first trial run and I need to get a leisure battery....or do I? So a couple of questions from a FC novice....
1) if I intend to always run on ehu do I actually need a battery - seller insisted I did otherwise it would blow lights etc?
2) what size battery would you guys recommend? Both Ah and dimensions (what will fit in Sterling battery box)
3) which side are the terminal fittings or does it not matter?
Hi we have just bought a Conway Cruiser and do not have a battery. I can only answer your first question in that if you are using EHU you do not need a battery. The battery only runs the 12v stuff like lights, water pump, fridge (if you are using electric). I'm sure someone will be along soon to answer your other questions.
Hi tats
We had a Pennine Sterling 510 SE also a 2002 model till we had to sell it in January.
In the whole 11 years we never had a battery,we always used ehu & the water pump & light worked off the charger, every thing else worked off 240v.
No doubt the experts will be along to say that's wrong but we never had any problems at all.
Good luck
Hi Paul & June,
thanks for your reply...that is good news as I don't want to fork out for a battery if there is really no need. Can you remember which settings you had the various switches? Presumably main rocker switch set to car(?) and red charger light to on?
thanks
Hi Tats, we have a 2000 sterling 510se, when we purchased it there were no for connections for a battery as previous owners only ever used Hook up with 12volts taken through the transformer, We have since had battery installed though as we do lots of 2 to 3 night stays and just go on Hook up for our main holiday, when on hook up we have the 3 way switch in the middle position with main 12volt switch on transformer set to on.

Hi Tats, The makers of folding campers recommend not to use the charging unit only to supply the 12v gear. They say it will overheat the unit which was designed to charge a battery. However I am a bad lad and have never used a battery on my cruiser.I hated lugging the heavy things about ,and the care you have to take maintaining them ie if you leave them great lengths of time without charging and discharging the plates go down .I have a couple of mains table lamps, instead of the 12v light ,therefore I am only using the water pump which is short duration and all has been fine up to now(famous last words)
My dandy has a transformer which is designed to run without a battery, but only up to a certain load. All I have is a 2x8watt light and the water pump. With just the light on it's surprising how hot the transformer gets.
I have to be careful not to put anything in the locker which will cover the transformer otherwise I think it would catch fire.
Cookie2, the fridge runs off 240volt mains if on EHU.
If running on gas with no EHU, there is possibly a very small 12volt feed to the fridge if it has auto ignition.
