Noooo, not oil or WD40, if these get on the canvas you're in more trouble than having slightly stiff poles.
The thing to use is Fabsil in an aerosol can, it's cheap, easily available in camping shops and it will lubricate the poles very nicely. Wipe off any excess of course because it can cause darker patches on the canvas if some does get onto it. But at least it won't make the canvas leak if it does.
