Hi All,

I have always found the site to be a well of knowledge when it comes to all things camping. I used the site when picking out our Royal Montpelier 9 which has served us well for the last few years. It is a great unit and huge for our family of 5.

So now the time has come for us to move on up to a trailer tent. We are looking for something that is easy to put up and accommodate the family with comfort. ages 4 6 and 13. Plus us 2, I'm 6'3" so something that is big enough to stand in would be great.

We had been looking at the pennine pullman or Conway Crusader as it has the seating / kitchen area and bedrooms all on the trailer with the option of the under trailer bedroom and awning. It seems that it is easy enough to set up too and can be used as a 2 bed for weekends rather than the slog of the awning just to have somewhere to sit and cook. Also the built in kitchen seating and toilet seems to be handy.

I would like any recommendations you have and I will look at all opinions. We will be looking to spend up to £5K on a used unit and will be traveling from Ireland to purchase in the UK if required.

Many thanks for your help on this guys and gals.

Derek

After looking long and hard, including going to the NEC show we went for the Raclet Safari. We thought about an FC with the kitchen inside but in the end discounted it on the grounds that I would be on the BBQ out the front of the tent being sociable with other campers whilst the OH would be cooking the new pots etc stuck at the back (might work for some, but not us!!!!) Also we do like a bit of poached salmon and having to live/sleep with the cooking smell after was a negative for us. And popping to the loo next to the kitchen dining table - not for us - lol.

We decided on the Raclet Safari in the end for its design, space, easy erection, comfy beds (beds are king size and the TT sleeps 6/8 (4 adults & 4 kids or 4 adults & another 2 adults or teens.

The main cabin takes about 5 minutes to put up and only needs 4 pegs to make it look neat. You can either attach the sun canopy direct to the cabin, say for a weekend trip, or add on the awning. Everything can be done with one person, but easier with two

Hi  Derkav.

The campers you mentioned are folding campers not really trailer tents .The penine pulman does not have a toilet it,s the penine pathfinder that has the toilet or the Conway crusader .They  are a little longer and heavier than the normal 6 berth campers ie pulman , cruiser ,ect.

Basically a folder camper is a caravan base with the built in units ,fridge  sink cooker wardrobe act. extending beds but canvas roof and sides.  Trailertents  usually have an outside kitchen a bit more basic, but usually  smaller and lighter packed away.

Having  owned both I much prefer the folding camper .It only takes 20 minutes to erect the main unit and have the choice of whether to erect the awning or not ,with no pegging down .With  my  trailertent I always had to erect the whole unit and peg it all down. Some on this site will jump down my neck ,but at the end of the day it,s all down to personal choice ,pros and cons.

The pathfinder, crusader or dandy destiny are all great campers and have toilets along with one of the triganos  ,which do tend to be a little cheaper. The newer Conway crusaders are made by penine.

Hope this gives you some idea  GCB

We've just upgraded to a trailer tent and also went for the Racelet Safari as we've had too many wet camping holidays with not enough 'living space'. Although we haven't had any rain since our purchase it is spacious enough for 6 of us, the beds are large and comfortable, we can fit everything we need in the trailer so more car space and it's easy to get up and down. In cool evenings there's more than enough room for us all and friends to sit inside and the kitchen unit is easy to unhook and set up.
We also looked at folding campers and were tempted, but thought we may aswell have a caravan if we wanted to go down the route of having a living area like that and we prefer to cook and eat outdoors if possible.
Admittedly you get more of a luxury feel in a folding camper, but I don't think you get as much sleeping space for your money. The Safari has two really generous underbed spaces which are ideal children's/teenagers bedrooms, plenty of space for a bed and all their associated 'necessities'!!!!!

Hi new to this web site but think the info is fab. We have being camping for many years  5 in family including a 21year old and a 17 year old who still come with us so we must be doing something right. We have an outwell tent (2nd one) which we love but we are thinking of getting a trailer tent (or at least I am)  for the extra bit of comfort. The mis-spent youth is starting to catch up on the bones. My question is the storing of the extra gear ie table, chairs, microwave (ya ) etc is there room in the trailer for these.

Hi Green, Welcome to the forum.

The amount of storage in the TT will depend on the make and model. We store that majority of our kit in the TT and front storage box. We also have a kitchen attached to the back of the TT where we store all of our kitchen stuff. In the car is mainly clothing and bedding and food/drink.
