hi I`ve inquired about having our cabin canvas cleaned but got a couple of questions they said they will clean it and waterproof it but I thought you don't need to waterproof it as it is self waterproofed when it gets wet if you know what I mean should I be getting it waterproofed as its not leaking thanks

No , if you get it waterproofed like a tent, it will need doing every 6months. I hose my tent down wait for it to dry and then use a soft brush to remove dirt .

You don't need to waterproof cotton canvas.

Unless....

You've damaged it somehow, for example by using the wrong sort of cleaning chemicals, or contaminating it with something like bubble mix or aerosols, or having had to treat it for mould, or something like that.

Or if it's got very old and thin.

Or if it's been done before by a previous owner. Actually if it's done properly you only need to renew it every 3-5 years but it's still a big job and costs money for the proofer, even if you DIY.

If the guy is telling you it will need proofed after cleaning he's either using the wrong cleaning methods, cleaning it too harshly, not confident in his rinsing or trying to make a few extra ££s. Or is a fanatical belt and braces type.

Can I ask you why it needs cleaned in the first place btw? Most cotton canvas can be cleaned to a perfectly satisfactory level by giving it a brush down with a soft brush when dry, to remove dust, mud and dried bird poo, then sponging it down with plain water. Gets rid of 90% of the grot. Individual stains can be treated separately but it's best to avoid messing around with cotton canvas tbh, bad cleaning can damage it far more than living with a simple dirty mark.

Exactly as above I would leave it.The other week a big wind came and knocked a pan of beans on the floor and splashed the cotton canvas.I waited for it to dry and sponged it down.Mostly gone just a slight orange stain.hardly noticeable .

the only reason we was going to get it cleaned was because they are making new bed skirts for it so was just going to have it cleaned proper while they take the canvas off
