A lot of it is down to gut instinct and common sense.
We saw an FC on Gumtree and contacted the seller who happened to be a guy that was setting himself up, dealing in FC's and working from home.
He seemed genuine to us and he supplied us with a lot of pictures and information and over a period of time and discussions back and forth, common sense told us that this guy was kosher.
We negotiated a deposit so that he would bring the FC north 150 miles and we would drive the 150 miles south and meet him on a campsite near Carlisle.
We saw the unit up. He slept in it overnight while we stayed locally B&B. In the morning we gave him cash and then he showed us how it was all packed up.
Yes, we took a chance sending him the deposit and the only "security check" I could do from this end was to look up his address on Google Earth and that looked like the place where the original pics had been taken.
Since then I have sold the FC and I did so on the same arrangement that we had with the original buyer.
Both the buying of the FC and the selling of it worked out well for all concerned and everyone was happy all round.
We have since bought a caravan and sold a Park Home, again through Gumtree and on both occasions they were cash transactions. I trust Cash. I do not trust any other form of transaction.
