Hi all. I have recently bought an old 1980s pennine pullman and it is great but has no awning. As it is so old I am not holding out much hope of finding an original but wondered if it is possible to buy a generic, free standing awning I could put up next to the FC? Do they even make generic ones? Any advice welcomed. Thank you.
Because folding camper awnings zip on rather than attach with an awning rail like a caravan you can't buy a generic one and even if you could find a folding camper one, chances are the zip would be wrong because they changed them every few years. You can get the adapted porch awnings that you can have a matching zip attached or use figure of 8 strips (lots of threads on the subject) or you can get a sun canopy and put windbreaks around it to get a covered area - no good if you need it for sleeping though. Have a search through the folding camper section on here and you should find some good ideas.
We got a movelite awning we use on are, look up drive away awning. Make sure you measure to the highest point on your fc as they come in different heights. We use a figure of 8 to attach the awning to the fc zip.
Look on my gallery for the pictures.
Thanks for the info. Have looked up figure of 8 strip. That is a good idea attaching to the zip. How much should I expect to pay for a drive lite similar to the one in your photo Bexamy?
Bexamy, very interested in how you have attached your awning to folding camper. If I understand, the figure of 8 is a double plastic strip! Does the zip fit in one channel and the awning cord in the other? Sorry to sound thick just checking before I go ahead and use this idea thanks
Yes the awning fits in one channel. The zip fits in the other, but you need to squeeze the channel together so it fits the zip on the fc. The best way is to warm the figure of 8 up with hot water so it makes the plastic pliable We used a kettle of boiling water and pored the water over one side of the figure of 8 strip and squeezed it together with pillars enough for it to slide on the zip but making sure it stays on the zip. I left one end open so we could Slide the figure of 8 on to the zip. It sounds a bit of a flap but ones you do one strip the other two are easy. You could put the figure of 8 in the bath to warm them up enough to close the gap up so it stays on the zip. Other people on here have done this so mit come up with different methods. Hope this helps and you can understand what I'm saying.
Thanks bexamy that helps a lot! One other question please, on the picture of the full awning, have you had to use figure of 8 all the way around the awning, sides and top? And then on the drive away is it just at the top, thanks
On the movelite drive away awning which is the blue awning on my pictures the figure of 8 only goes on the top and their is a elastic pull cord you pull tight and peg down. On the full awning we got with the fc it zips up all the way round.
