Hello everyone :0)...I have a fiesta diesel turbo with 67bhp and a Hyundai Matrix petrol with 102 bhp and was wondering which would make a better tow car for my Cabanon Saturn trailer tent, it is the non kitchen version which saves on weight but I will be transporting in the car a table top fridge, cooker, microwave etc etc.I thought the petrol 102 bhp would be best but have had conflicting advice from friends....Any advice would be greatly apprieciated.

Welcome to the forum.

First thing to consider is the towing limits of these cars and the max weight of the trailer. I expect both cars are capable of towing the trailer but it's best to check before you make any expensive mistakes.

A diesel car will usually give an easier drive due to the extra torque of the engine but I expect that fuel economy may be a big consideration here as well.

Do the tow bars cost the same? If one tow bar is considerably cheaper that may sway your decision as well.

I would probably go for the diesel providing it has sufficient towing capacity but in reality I expect it is down to whichever is the cheapest and most comfortable to use.

I hope this helps and I haven't confused you too much.

Cheers ROB , totally uncertain which one to use, The Matrix is easier to live with due to more space, roof rails for top box etc but just want to be certain of the safest and most effiecent one to use.I would prob get more mpg with the diesel but the extra power in the petrol might be a bit more advantageous than saving a tenner here and there :0)..Looks like I gonna toss a coin .

If the Matrix is bigger and has roof rails I'd go for that because you will find more useful things to take away with you and will want more space. I'm sure it will be fine with the trailer but check the car handbook to make sure the towing weight is ok.

We used to tow our Conway trailer tent with a 1.3 Astra (1981 model) and then a 1.2 Nova and we never had a problem with power, we even got better fuel consumption than normal.

I would think about which car you're more likely to keep for a while as well. Save having to buy another tow bar soon.

We had an automatic 1.6gsi petrol Matrix and we towed a Pennine Fiesta folding camper all the way to the south of France. It struggled on one or two of the bigger climbs after Clermont Ferrand but it made there and back without any bother.
