Hello campers, this is my first message on this site........I have packed away my Trailer Tent for the winter in a damp garage and I am too scared to get it out in case its ruined..........does anyone know, can I get a new canvas for my Trigano Oceane if its gone mouldy in the garage? It was tidily put away with its cover on properly. EEEK please advise!
Well, as long as the actual canvas wasn`t wet when packed away, I don`t think it will have come to harm. Plenty of trailer tents are stored outside with just their waterproof cover between them and the elements, mine included.
Thanks Steve and Val, that's a bit reassuring. Does anyone know, can I get a new canvas if the worst comes to the worst? Even the kids are worrying about it! let this be a lesson to me!
We store our Pennine outside with all the soft furnishings taken out and stored in the attic for the winter . We opened the unit up last weekend to clean it and replace everything in preparation for next weekend and everything was OK , in fact it still smells new after two years use and two winters. But I must admit I always feel a bit apprehensive when the time comes to open up the unit after it has been stored all winter.
I used to have a Conway Cruiser that was 10 years old when I sold it - my parents bought it new, sold it to a couple we camped with when it was about 7, they kept it for one season, then I bought it - it was always stored outside with just its 'normal' transit cover (no extra winter storage cover) and the canvas was still sound when I had to let it go. If the canvas was dry when you packed it, you should be OK, but only opening it up will answer the question.
i think that you have joined the extra club of worry like hell, welcome, we all do it no matter how we store our trailers. ours has been outside all winter with the soft furnishings opened it 2 weeks ago and everything was fine despite having at least 6 inches of snow sat on it nevermind the rain
mine was tucked up in the garage, and I still worried about it! but for other reasons:- mice making it their home for the winter. I opened it last weekend and every thing was fine, phew!!
Thanks so much everyone who answered. I really appreciate knowing I am not the only one who is not a Perfect Camper......cant wait to get it out, sort it out and then take the kids camping. Norfolk here we come. By the way Jan, I have never heard of camping valeting services, if its mouldy is this really not The End?
Our trailer tent has spent 2 winters outside but this winter it went into storage as the travel cover gained a whole in it... im always relieved when i have opened it and found all is well, however havent checked it yet and going away in april.
It is only natural to be aprehensive when opening up after so many weeks, hell thats human nature for ya!
I believe a Canvas is more likely to go mouldy in a damp garage than in the open air even in the wet and windy conditions of winter.
I think that is because in the stillness of the garage the atmosphere in the folds of the canvas becomes 'stale' which will promote the conditions required for mould to take hold and grow. Outside the air slowly is replaced (albeit faster than in the garage) and the fresher air, even if cold and damp does not encourage mould.
You may be right Oldbwl, it certainly sounds scientific. But tomorrow is the moment of truth, and I will be fortified by knowing of Jan's site which I am just about to go and look up in preparation for the Terrible Moment. Good side of it is, I just cant wait to go camping again.
