I was always told an alco(?) hitch needs to be dry but an ordinary ball hitch needs to be greased. When I had a ball hitch fitted to my old car the fitter put loads of dark coloured grease on it...which I immediately wiped all over my trousers leg!
Your right Bob ALKO or Winterhoff dry, anything else greased.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
You don't need much grease & it don't really matter what you use. For a standard(ie non stabiliser)hitch, aerosol spray grease does the job on ball & into hitch. Hitch & ball should be cleaned regularly with solvent & regreased otherwise grit & dust will just turn into a grinding paste.
For this time on a Friday that's pretty darned good

My understanding that is that it is always a good idea to have a light film of grease on the tow ball as long as you are not using one of the friction type hitch devices. As mentioned it is a good idea to regularly clean the ball and hitch as dirt creates grinding paste. Not greasing a normal non- friction set up creates wear and noise. Most greases are suitable. I have a small pot of gun grease which contains teflon it is quite thick and a little smears a long way.
