Has anybody on this forum seen a Jayco Cardinal 8 or owned one in the past. If your not sure what I'm on about I have a picture of mine in my gallery. They are an american import brought in by Conway, mine is an 1981 model. I'm just curious as to see if there are any more of these still on the go in the UK.
The only thing I have found is there is no spares for these anywhere. So if you are looking at one remember to check everything. If its missing you'll not get another, mine had a few cushions missing so I had to have set made. Double check the brakes are working, the bendix hydraulic system is prone to leaks. Again no spares I've had to convert mine to cable operated. If the canvas is dodgy your looking at £1000 to replace. Apart from that they are good. Were have you seen one for sale.?
There's one of these on Ebay right now. It looks massive inside - 7 berth, I'm assuming from the photos there is a 2 x single seating area that makes up into a single berth?
A lot of camper if it goes for the asking price but knowing the length of our cardinal (which is based on the single-axle Jayco isn't it?) you must need a long driveway to store it.
Thanks all:) actually that's the one I've been considering (and I was wrong it's not an 8 it's much earlier) had a quote of £2000 minimum to sort the canvas (plus getting the trailer itself to the other end of the country) and another £1500 to modernise the running gear etc and that's before the sparky and gas man get involved so even doing everything other than the canvas and brakes, etc and assuming no/minimal damp it's still gonna take a lot of love to modernise and return to former glory.
The one on ebay is the same as mine,a 1981 model it is an 8 berth, the canvas for a new one is about £1000 from east coast marine. brakes to convert is the cost of a uk hitch. I converted mine for less than £200. instead of using the hydraulics I used the hand brake mechanism. On mine I took out the interior and put in a modern one. If you need any info or pictures please ask.
Wow that's a great price for that much canvas. I was told £2k by probably the leading trailer tent/folding camper canvas company who are currently apparently charging £1.5k for the later and much smaller Conway Cardinals so great to know there are other choices out there :) Sorry to ask an uninformed question (I haven't looked underneath) - presumably the handbrake mechanism operates on all 4 road wheels i.e. so you're UK road legal? Would absolutely love to see some pics, thanks v much for the offer :)
As long as you send them your old canvas as a template they said they could do it for that, mine was in good nick so it only needed a tidy up. The hand brake only operates the front wheels. the part in the hub is only the only bit that you would need to get made (easy to do I made mine). So now all four wheels are cable braked.
Great info thank you :) I don't think that particular one has good canvas (looks quite ripped and mildewy though could just be the colour rendition/photo shading on my monitor) so looks like may well be better off with a whole remake plus my other half is very style conscious and objects to the colour (personally I think it looks fine!) amongst other things (!). Anyway, best to budget for the worst case just in case. I also intended to modernise the interior would love to see what you've done with yours :) How robust have you found the cables and seals - have you had to do any damp removal/timber replacement or re-cable? I've seen some scary roof remake videos of this exact model on the web....
I have put a few photo's on my profile, don't know how to add any more. My new interior is very similar to a pennine pathfinder layout. The cables are not to bad, the main lift cable I've had to replace. I have lots of photo's and lots of info if you need it. No damp to sort out, just the floor had woodworm in it at sometime. So I had to replace some of it.
It's a page rather than a group so looks like it will only let me respond to one of the pages posts rather than start a new one so how about janestellie at yahoo dot com :) Thanks again really appreciate it.
