I did exactly that and it came up like new.
I sanded it down, gave it about 6 coats of undercoat sanding lightly between each coat.
Then I applied the spray paint, again giving it about 6 coats and sanding between coats and then lacquered it with a final rub down.
As you can see, came up a treat but was time consuming because I left it 24 hours between each coat of paint. I just used Halfords spray paint.
Weathered well
