Well I have unpacked trailer tent (which I left in damp garage for the winter not sure if quite dry when packed away last summer) and found that.......it was absolutely fine! Canvas very slightly greyer than it was though, and I think it needs a good clean. So any advice welcome please! Do I scrub it, and what with? And do I put some of that water repellent cleaner stuff on? Yes I have thanked my lucky stars.........even all the stuff I had left in like sleeping bags and cooker etc, all OK........
Arghh...don`t scrub it with any sort of detergent! Ruins the waterproofing!
Canvas does fade over time...the sunlight bleaches it. Look at the difference between an exposed bit and a piece under a zip or flap. . Put it up and give the folds a shake out, then take it away for a rainy weekend or turn the hose on it and soak it. I bet you it doesn`t leak. Canvas doesn`t need reproofed every year. When was it last done?
Well I bought it last year (second hand) and it was totally waterproof all summer, even in heavy storm. But I do think it looks a bit as if the grey could develop into mildew spots which is why I was going to scrub it (I wont now!). Will just leaving it in open air to thoroughly dry out be the best thing?
Old wives remedy but rubbing it with bread will clean the canvas. Try it on a small bit and see if it makes any difference. The conway owners site have lots of tips on how to clean canvas.
------------- Good friends are hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget.
When we set up our camper on Good Frdiay we found that we had mildew on the inner tents and some small patches on the canvas ... any suggestions on how to clean it off ?
I looked on the Conway site as Jan suggested, and saw that suggestion for mildew is 1 dessertspoon of bleach in 1 gal of water, then reproof any treated areas. I will try it and let you know if it works..............see also posting about Thomsons (?) waterproofing stuff about which I know nothing at all but will try it.......any more ideas from you old salts out there gratefully received by novice camper....thanks!
