a few weeks to go before our holiday and thought be wise to check the lights on the TT before we go.
all work except the right indicator, the warning beep SOMETIMES sounds but there is no flash from the bulb.
it worked when i initially moved the bulb in it's cheap pressed steel holder, but no more.
slightly confused i have swapped bulbs around with no joy.
i'll pick up a voltmeter from work on monday, but as all the other lights work as they should i will rule out the earth.
i have even held the bulb and put the earth and indicator wire onto it, no flash but a bleep and also changed to a new bulb, no difference.
even swapping the connection to the brake light - warning buzzer but no light.
could it be the indicator light has broken somewhere in the loom?
any thoughts?
There are screw connections in the car socket and the trailer plug. These can be loose or not connected properly or corroded. Then there are the pins and sockets in these plug & socket.
Then the light itself has connections and the connection to the lamp (bulb) can all be loose or corroded.
The copper strip which often forms the connection to the lamp can harden and lose its springiness. Replacing the fitting often helps.
However, the best way is to use a voltmeter to trace where there is voltage or not to narrow down where the problem is.
When I have this sort of problem, my first action is to put on a Trailer Board. This tells me whether it is a trailer problem or a car/towbar socket problem.
Do you know someone that you can borrow a trailer board from?
We had all sorts of issues with one of ours, couldnt work out if it was the trailer wiring, the connectors or issues at the car side.
In the end bought a trailer socket tester less than a tenner delivered and extremely handy.
Our current fc the rhs indicator wasnt working, lots of bulb swapping and cursing later and it turns out that a quick rub over all the pressed metal contacts in the tail light unit solved the problem.
Also, from your original post I cant see how the buzzer would sound if the light didnt flash.....theorectically that should be impossible.
borrowed a trailer board and same problem so it was the car side of things.
found i had a broken wire for the side lights so fixed that. in the end it was the warning buzzer that was defunct.
and yes oddly the buzzer sounded but flashing from the bulb
