I didn't get a chance to speak to the folk at my own college, but I'm doing a course at uni and one of the other students is a lecturer (teaching apprentice sparks and industry) from another college.
I asked him about the caravan situation and I will try to summarise our 5-10 minute discussion.
Hookup lead should be minimum (his word) IP44, correct cable (can't remember his terms) and both the campsite post should and van should be 30ma RCD protected. He also mentioned that the post itself should have no more than 3 sockets. I asked him about the IP55 rating and he felt that this applied more to static vans and would apply in the toilet , shower area - didn't talk too much about this.
I asked him about RCDs and their reliability. He told me he has seen one fail - sat buzzing at him, but wouldn't trip - only one, but it can happen. Also mentioned that when an RCD is fitted now, the installer is required to stick a label beside the RCD to state it should be tested every 3 months.
He said that a good earth (which can be difficult to acheive sometimes) is just as important as having an RCD fitted. He said RCDs are great when they work, but that doesn;t mean you don't need an earth, just in case, as this will then trip out the mcb if there is a fault in an appliance.
Mentioned my setup (proper camping hookup with RCD) , and he thought that was fine - but no regs for this, except the campsite post.
Didn't discuss tents - it was home time and he wasn't a camper himself, I don't think he could have given a generic opinion/answer.
Fair play to him, I don't know how it remembers all this stuff, but I suppose he's paid to know it inside out.
