I can't seem to get my water heater to work on hook up(never worked on gas) , I have checked the fuses trip switches etc, it's always worked before but the water has a tendency to drain back out ,
any ideas anybody?

Silly question but have you switched the drain tap off ?

Not a silly question it's often the simple things we forget, and yes I have ,there is water coming through but not getting hot

Can't really help then I'm afraid.
Has it ever worked ?
Is the light on the switch when switched on ?
Is the dial turned up ?
Does the hot tap have water coming through when switched on alone or only when mixed with cold ?

Just some more obvious questions

Check the fuse on the switch and fuses on fuse board, on ehu the dial only works for gas. But it's not instant so wait for at least 15mins .
Sometimes they go and expensive to replace.

Have checked all fuses etc ,water coming through has always worked before , think it must be broken, just have to use the kettle

Do you have gas? If so, that if yours does try to use that.
