I have both but wonder if the system will work with either or is designed to only take propane?

I have both in my folding camper, and they both work fine, just by changing the bottle over. Apparently, the regulators can be different, but as long as you have the right regulator on each bottle, they will both work equally well in any folding camper (depending on temperature, of course).

if going in winter use propane as it will work at very low temps ,where butane will stop working at low temps

If your regulator is fixed to the back of the gas locker (Most Pennines from about 2004 onwards) then it is just a different connector you need on the hose that goes to the bottle.
